Why battery charges slowly or charging stops at 50 or 80 %

You may wonder why your VAIO battery does not fully charge, or why the last part of the charging takes quite some time.

Please note that this is not a malfunction, but may be related to your Battery Care settings or temperature conditions.

1. Battery is not charging above 50 or 80 %

2. Battery is charging slower than expected

1. Battery is not charging above 50 or 80 %

When Battery Care has been enabled, charging will stop at the configured percentage of either 50 % or 80 %. This feature is disabled by default but will stay active after enabling it. To be able to charge your battery to 100 %, disable Battery Care in VAIO Control Center.

More info on Battery Care function (charge limitation)

Recent VAIO models come with Battery Care function preinstalled. With this utility, battery charging can be limited to a certain percentage, in order to prolong battery life when using your VAIO connected to an AC adapter for long periods of time.

The Battery Care interface - when installed - can be found in Start screen -> VAIO Control Center –> Power and Battery.

The view may be a bit different depending on the version of VAIO Control Center.

2. Battery is charging slower than expected

You battery may charge slowly due to one of below conditions.
  • When the battery level reaches 80%, charging will by default slow down until it reaches maximum capacity.
  • Battery charging may automatically be limited to a certain percentage under certain temperature conditions. To avoid this from happening, we recommend to store the VAIO in an environment temperature between 10 ºC and 40 ºC.
