Troubleshooting BRAVIA TV power issues

The TV turns on or off by itself / randomly reboots, or the picture turns black while the sound remains

IMPORTANT: This article applies only to specific products and/or operating systems. Check Applicable Products and Categories for details.

Does your BRAVIA TV repeatedly turn on or off, randomly reboot, or the picture turns black while the sound remains?

If the answer is 'yes', the troubleshooting guide below may help resolve the issue.

Note: To check your TV type, refer to the following article: How to check if your BRAVIA TV is a Google TV™, Android TV™, or other TV.

    1. Update the TV software to the latest version

Updating the software to the latest version may help fix specific TV issues.

For more details, refer to the following article: How to perform a software update on your TV.

    2. Check the TV settings

If the TV turns on or off at regular intervals (30 minutes to an hour), or when an HDMI-connected device is powered on or off, you may need to check the settings of the TV.

    3. Make sure the AC power cord (mains lead) is properly plugged in

    1. If your TV has a power cord (mains lead) that can be removed, make sure it is firmly plugged into the back of the TV.
    2. If the TV has a separate AC power adaptor, check the connection between the adaptor and power cord (mains lead) as well.
    3. Make sure the power cord (mains lead) is properly plugged into the AC outlet on the wall.
    4. Remove any power strips, surge suppressors, or other similar devices and plug the TV directly into the AC outlet on the wall to verify that these additional devices are not causing the issue.
    5. Try a different AC wall outlet and make sure the outlet is not controlled by a switch that is turned off.

    4. Check for remote control issues

Remove the batteries from the remote and check if the issue persists. This tests whether the remote is malfunctioning, rather than the TV.

    Notes:

    • If you are using a multi-function remote, check it in addition to the supplied one.
    • Covering the remote control sensor of the TV is also a way to check if the issue occurs. Refer to the TV manual for information about the location of the remote control sensor.
Note: You cannot use this method to verify if the issue is caused by a remote control if the remote itself is not an infrared type, such as the Touchpad Remote Control.

    5. Check for issues with externally connected devices

Disconnect all external devices from the TV (e.g. USB, LAN, HDMI, antenna, etc.), except the AC power cord (mains lead), and verify that the external devices are not causing the issue. If the TV condition has improved, reconnect the devices one at a time until you find the device that is causing the issue.
