How to share my Home Wi-Fi password with a friend using a QR code?
Sharing your Wi-Fi password doesn’t have to be frustrating!
If your smartphone runs Android 10 or higher, you can share your Home Wi-Fi password with other people via a QR code on your smartphone. Here's how it works.
How to share a Wi-Fi password by generating a QR code
To quickly share your Wi-Fi password, there are a few steps you need to follow to generate a QR code on your smartphone, which the person receiving the password can then scan on their smartphone.
The person sharing the password should follow the steps below:
- On your smartphone, go to Settings → Network & Internet → Wi-Fi.
- Tap on the Wi-Fi name that your smartphone is currently connected to.
- Tap on Share.
- Scan your fingerprint / Use your PIN to confirm.
- A QR code is generated on your smartphone screen for someone else to scan.
Once the person sharing the password has generated a QR code, the person receiving the password should follow these steps:
- On your smartphone, go to Settings → Network & Internet → Wi-Fi.
- Tap on the QR code icon (located to the right of ‘Add network’).
- QR code scanner opens.
- Scan the QR code generated by the person sharing the password.
How do I scan a QR code?
Newer smartphones have a built-in QR code reader in the Camera app. This means that all you have to do is open the Camera app and focus it on a QR code for a few seconds. A pop-up link should appear on the screen, and tapping the link takes you to the website hidden in the QR code.
