When setting the headset in the charging case and closing the lid, the indicator (red) flashes for about 15 seconds and then turns off.

This is an indication that the remaining battery charge of the charging case is low.
Connect the charging case with the supplied USB Type-C™ cable, and finish charging the headphones with the cable connected.
