Sony showcases new creative cinematography possibilities at Camerimage 2016

Production professionals no longer need to compromise on image quality with the latest CineAlta lineup demonstrated at the International Film Festival

Basingstoke, November 3rd, 2016: Sony will be returning to this year’s Camerimage in Bydgoszcz, Poland, to showcase its full CineAlta digital cinematography range, designed to help creative film-makers capture breath-taking 4K detail, colour and contrast. Visitors will be able to see the full CineAlta line-up including the F55, F65, alongside the new AXS-R7 Portable Memory Recorder.

The durable AXS-R7 attaches seamlessly to the F5 and F55 CineAlta cameras, speeding up the 4K-production workflow without compromising on quality, by doubling 4K recording from 60 fps up to 120 fps with the F55. And because of its durability it’s ideal for documentary use, as well as everyday production. Sony will also be showcasing its X-OCN (Extended tonal range Original Camera Negative) 16bit recording format, used with the AXS-R7, which includes a powerful new algorithm to process original data, reducing media storage costs while ensuring there’s no impact on picture quality. For example this ensures cost effective 4k HDR while still keeping highest quality in 16 bit. Sony will also be demonstrating the new F65 OnSet Livegrading workflow with Pomfort, and new improvements to backup/archive solutions, such as Sony’s Optical Disk Archive (ODA), developed to help filmmakers take care of the most important part of the production – the content.
“More and more cinematographers are choosing to shoot in 4K and High Dynamic Range (HDR) because of the new creative possibilities it opens up,” said Sebastian Leske, Marketing Manager, Cinematography at Sony Professional Solutions Europe. “Our CineAlta range has become the go-to-choice for forward-looking filmmakers looking to take advantage of these technologies to create images that deliver the maximum emotional impact on screen.”

As well as seeing the latest solutions in action leading cinematographers will be sharing their experiences in using Sony solutions at the festival. Filmmaker Woody Allen chose Sony CineAlta for his first ever digital shoot with Cafe Society, which opened Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. Acclaimed cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, who shot the film with Sony’s CineAlta F65 camera, will be hosting a seminar session about his experiences at the festival.
Speaking about his experience using the camera Storaro said, “Visual expression goes back to cave paintings, painting on wood, on canvas, black & white photography, colour, 3D. Now is the time for digital. Through all of my experiments, I have pushed to have a specific level where I can feel comfortable. The only camera, in my opinion, that is at that level is the Sony F65 – not only because it can give us 4K, 16-bit colour, which is the minimum that we can consider to be as close as possible to the level of film, even if it’s not yet there.”

Upcoming epic Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, directed by Ang Lee, is another example of a cutting-edge film being shot using the F65, which has become the leading camera of choice amongst cinematographers. Visitors will be able to get a glimpse of the cinematic experience to come by viewing the trailer in 4K/HDR at the Sony stand.

Sony will be exhibiting on stand from 12th-19th November.
