Sony studio cameras selected for Channel 4’s prime time show Gogglebox

Broadcast camera hire company Shooting Partners invests in Sony’s Full HD robotic studio cameras to equip its roaming film teams

9th September 2016, London: TShooting Partners, the broadcast equipment hire company, has selected Sony’s BRC-H900 Full HD robotic studio cameras to produce Gogglebox, Channel 4’s award winning British reality TV show.

Regularly drawing in over four million viewers an episode, Gogglebox goes into living rooms across the country to get the nation’s reactions to the week’s biggest and best shows on television. With a five day turnaround per episode, Shooting Partners designed bespoke rigs which could easily be set up and deconstructed in all of the households by the five shooting teams moving across the country to capture footage from the 10 Gogglebox families.

Each of the roaming film teams are equipped with 2x Sony BRC-H900 cameras. The cameras enable the team to achieve Full HD images with a great dynamic range, while also providing the flexibility necessary for such a specific operation. The 14x optical zoom feature provided by the cameras allows for precise, emotive close-up reactions of the family members, whilst remaining quiet and discreet enough to capture the reality of the living rooms without disturbance.
As well as needing the best kit to capture content, Shooting Partners required recording solutions to store their recorded content. Sony’s XDCAM discs were selected as they complement the existing workflow between Shooting Partners and post-production house, Envy. The discs had already been used in several other productions by Envy, who recommended them for their easy integration.

Shaun Wilton, Shooting Partners’ Broadcast Facilities Director, commented: “We pride ourselves on delivering the best possible technology to our clients for each particular brief. Despite Gogglebox being different to many fly-on-the-wall productions, we were able to provide ideal solutions due to the superior image quality and flexibility of Sony’s cameras. As well as Gogglebox, the production team are now using the cameras for shooting all of its spin-offs, including Gogglesprogs, and Gogglebox’s Stand Up To Cancer celebrity specials.”

Norbert Paquet, Strategic Marking Manager, Sony Professional Solutions Europe, added: “Broadcast equipment hire companies such as Shooting Partners have to deliver specific solutions for their clients dependent on the production being created. Sony’s BRC-H900 is capable of producing uncompromising broadcast picture quality images, while also providing the flexibility desired for such a diverse shoot. It’s this incredible adaptability that makes the BRC-H900 perfect for such unique, fast-turnaround shows as Gogglebox.”
Shooting Partners is dedicated to connecting production and creative teams with the very best broadcast hire equipment on the market today, specialising in Sony XDCAM hire. The company’s large pool of in-house team technicians are trained in all aspects of the equipment and are capable of supplying all camera kit, lighting and crew for a wide variety of shoots.
