Malmö Concert Hall improves electro acoustics with Sony Professional audio wireless technology

Basingstoke – September 9th, 2016: Malmö Concert Hall is a newly built, state of the art, facility, situated in the centre of the redeveloped port area in Malmö. The concert hall is the largest investment ever undertaken by Malmö Municipality and the project is expected to attract record numbers of tourists to the third largest city in Sweden. The overall aim was to create the very best concert hall in Sweden in terms of acoustics and electro acoustics and Sony Professional audio wireless technology was chosen to help achieve that.

Background
Malmö Live’s new concert hall opened its doors in late 2015. Since then, the concert hall has primarily seen performances by Malmö Symphony Orchestra (MSO), but has also been the venue for several concerts with major rock artists. The concert hall can seat up to 1,600 people and comprises a total area of 17,000 square metres. The aim is for the concert hall to host a live performance every day of the year, with the auditoriums utilising the latest technology and leading acoustics.

The creation of world-class acoustics and electro acoustics was the number one objective when the concert hall was built, and in order to improve the electro acoustic sound, Malmö Live chose to install the Sony DWX digital wireless microphone system.

Challenge - Building the best concert hall in Sweden
The City of Malmö enlisted the help of Alf Berntsson/Artifon AB, an acoustics and AV technology consultancy company in the planning stages of the concert hall, in order to create optimal electro acoustics from the outset when laying the foundation. The next challenge was to implement a digital microphone system that could deliver the best possible sound for the PA system. The work involving electroacoustic equipment was managed by Arva Trading AB, a well-known supplier of professional audio products in Sweden.

“When it came to choosing products and systems that can live up to expectations, we opted for Sony, a reliable supplier that we have been working with for many years and whose products are world-class,” said Ronny Sjöstrand, Technical Manager and Project Manager at Arva.
The Sony solution
The solution that was chosen was the DWX series digital wireless microphone system, comprising of 12 Dual Channel Digital Wireless Receivers DWR-R02D, 16 digital wireless belt-pack transmitters DWT-B01, 12 digital wireless handheld microphones DWM-02 with DPA d:facto capsule, 4 Uni-directional UHF antennas AN-01 and 2 remote controls for the digital wireless system RMU-01.

The Sony DWX receiver DWR-R02D is the ideal receiver for live concerts, theatre and opera because the digital wireless microphone system transmits and receives high-quality 24 bit/48 kHz digital audio in a specific frequency bandwidth up to 72Mhz. The receiver also supports a full remote control of the wireless system with access to the transmitter and receiver settings via a Windows-based PC, tablet or smartphone, which was an important deciding factor.
“Malmö Live wanted an exceptional electroacoustic sound that was among the best in the world. A sound where the listener does not even notice the loudspeakers, and where the sound completely surrounds the listener and incorporates the full range. The entire sound system, which was built with the Sony DWX Series in mind has been created to the optimum level” said Ronny Sjöstrand.

Why Sony Professional was chosen
The supplier, Arva, is very familiar with the Sony digital wireless microphone system. Sony and Arva have together delivered similar systems to many other concert venues such as the Malmö Opera and Gothenburg Opera. This long term business partnership and trust in the solutions Sony provides was one of the main reasons why Malmö Live opted for Sony.
Another driving factor was the high quality, reliability, flexibility and advanced technical standard of the microphone system itself.

“At Arva we are experts in our field and have long experience within both analogue and digital audio, so we know what works. The concert hall’s high standards with regard to electroacoustics were a perfect match for the tailor-made Sony solution we were able to supply. Sony are very keen to hear what industry distributors think about their products and they are always looking to improve further. This is why they have managed to stay at the forefront of innovation,” said Ronny Sjöstrand.

“The fact that Sony’s audio solutions have been used by several opera houses and concert halls in Sweden, and beyond, is a testament to the quality of our technology and products,” said Markus Warlich, Product Specialist Professional Audio, Sony Europe Limited. We’re delighted that yet again Malmö Live have opted for our market-leading transmitters and receivers for the new concert hall and we know audiences will be wowed by what they’ll hear”.
