Sony Collaborates with Altera and Macnica Americas to Make an FPGA IP Core Available for IP Live Production System

A flexible solution to achieve compatibility with Sony’s IP Live Production System using Field Programmable Gate Array is demonstrated at IBC 2015

Basingstoke, September 11th, 2015: Sony is collaborating with industry leading companies to establish and promote Sony’s IP Live Production System.

The IP Live Production System is a value-added solution that increases operational efficiency while providing robust support for high-value modalities such as 4K and 8K. The IP Live Production System streamlines and modernises live broadcast workflows, in addition to supporting next generation technologies emerging in content creation.

At IBC 2015, Sony has announced that a major development supporting this technology has been achieved in collaboration with Altera Corporation and Macnica Americas. Macnica is demonstrating support of Sony IP Live technology on Altera’s FPGA through their IP and showing interoperability with Sony IP Live Production Systems.

“Altera is excited to showcase the very first FPGA implementation of Sony’s IP Live Production System which is an enabling technology in the transition to a complete IP based infrastructure. Altera and Macnica have been working closely in collaboration with Sony to bring this solution to the market, and with this joint IBC IP demonstration, we have just taken a major first step in doing so,” said Umar Mughal, director of the Broadcast Business Unit at Altera.

“Offering multiple development choices is a key driver to bring a wide variety of products by our partner companies to the IP Live Production System workflow,” said Tetsuya Iwamoto, Senior General Manager, Sony Corporation. “We are pleased to show the FPGA IP core demo for Sony’s IP Live Production System at IBC in collaboration with Altera and Macnica. Our supporting companies can choose either this FPGA IP core or Sony’s LSI module to support Sony’s IP Live Production System according to their development needs.”

Macnica Americas, a major IP core developer to Altera FPGA, plans to make this key IP core and its functions such as error correction and packetisation defined in Sony’s IP Live Production System, available in December 2015. This IP core, combined with SMPTE ST 2059 time sync IP and Sony’s Low Latency Video Codec (LLVC)IP, will give device manufacturers the flexibility to support Sony’s IP Live Production System with Altera’s Arria 10 and Stratix FPGA families.

This FPGA IP core is highlighted in Sony’s IBC booth (12.A10) with a live demonstration is provided at Altera’s IBC booth (2.A50).
