Fulvio Risuleo wins the Sony CineAlta Discovery Prize at Cannes for the short film Varicella (Chickenpox)
Cannes, 21st May 2015: At tonight’s “La Semaine de la Critique” award ceremony The Jury, headed by the Israeli actress and director Ronit Elkabetz, selected the short film Varicella (Chickenpox) from director Fulvio Risuleo as the winner of the Sony CineAlta Discovery prize.
Fulvio Risuleo (from Italy) has directed Ghigno Sardonico (2013), Reportage Bizarre (2014), and Lievito Madre (2014). Varicella (2015) is his fourth short film.
“Both a storyteller and dissembler Fulvio Risuleo singles out one true disease: maternal overprotection. The staging which begins with a naturalistic look grows increasingly stylised until the last frame, which seems to give way to the genre of horror and the pervasive power of poisonous ideas. ” Fabien Gaffez, coordinator of the short films selection committee.
Ainara Porron, Cinematography Marketing Manager, Sony Europe congratulated the winner: “We’re delighted to award Fulvio Risuleo the Sony CineAlta Discovery prize. It’s great to discover new filmmakers. Sony has always been keen to encourage emerging talent in film production, so being here at Cannes in the heart of the movie industry is very important to us.”
