Summer Competition Winner
As longer days and shorter nights washed over Europe, we asked you to show us your best images that epitomised the essence of summer. As usual, we weren’t disappointed with the thousands of entries we received from every corner of Europe. However, one image stood out to our judges.
The winning photo was taken by Spanish photographer Pedro Grimaldi.
It was taken in Uluwatu, Bali. The idea was to create something different using the last light of the day while also merging feminine beauty with the sea. I shot it with my Sony Alpha 7 III and the 50mm f/1.8 lens using the maximum aperture, and of course I had the camera inside a waterproof housing!”

The image is perfectly executed and is a great example of how simple elements can be used to create a fantastic image. Despite its simplicity, it was an image that had been in Pedro’s mind for a long time.
It was completely planned. However, it was not easy because the exact point of light I needed was going to last a very short time. I always try to work with natural light and as summer brings us the best lights of the year, I love to take advantage of that. The result was something beautiful.”
“You can almost feel the hot summer sea breeze when you look at the image. It is so simple yet encapsulates the spirit and freedom of Summer,” said a Sony spokesperson.
As the winner of the competition, Pedro is now the proud owner of a Sony Alpha 7R IV, which he plans to use alongside his Alpha7 III.
“For me the Sony Alpha7 III is an all-terrain camera par excellence. Despite not being the newest model, it allows me to work with both video and photography at an excellent standard. I’m looking forward to using my Alpha 7R IV for studio work and projects that require high resolution. I cannot wait to see how this beast performs!”
Runners Up
Pedro’s winning image was followed closely behind by Cuneyt Gumushaneli’s (@cuneytgumushaneli) perfectly timed image of a hot air balloon floating between two rocky sea cliffs and Benjamin Riquelme’s (@benjaminriquelme_) beautiful underwater image of two free divers kissing.
