Home Competition Winner: Togetherness

Having spent most of 2020 confined to our homes we challenged photographers all around Europe to shoot an image that was the embodiment of what ’Home’ means to them. As usual we had many different interpretations and entries from all corners of Europe.

The winning image was taken by Selene Anna Lodi from Italy. For the last few years, Selene and her partner have been travelling around the world in a van, until the pandemic stopped them in their tracks in Argentina and they had to return home to Italy, where the image was taken.

‘Years travelling has stimulated our creativity so, when we found ourselves inside the walls of the house it was difficult at the beginning. I tried to recreate a space where I could escape from reality and keep myself motivated by playing and experimenting with photography.’

The winning image depicts Selene and her partner pouring honey from spoon to spoon until it eventually drizzles on to pancakes below. It has a comfort and warm that goes beyond being just a photograph of honey and pancakes.

‘While travelling, we began to appreciate minimalism and what was actually essential to us, and pancakes were one of our favourite breakfasts. We took the photo just a just a couple of days after our wedding. Due to the pandemic, it was not possible to have any kind of official celebration, so we decided to celebrate in our own way, with something that, even if within the walls of the house, would remind us of the simplicity of our moments on the road and of being together with little’ says Selene.

The image stood out amongst the thousands of entries, with a Sony representative describing it as ‘a perfect depiction of ‘togetherness’ that reminds us that ‘Home’ is much more than bricks and mortar’.

Selene shot the image on the Sony Alpha 6400 and the 16-50mm kit lens, but as the winner she has chosen the Sony Alpha 7C + 28-60mm because of its compact size and full frame backlit sensor.

‘It amazes me how such a compact and small device can have such a powerful full frame sensor! I have high expectations of this and hope it will allow me to capture even more detail in my images. I can’t wait to resume travelling so that I can start taking photos with it!’

There were also two strong images that achieved second and third place in the competition, taken by Amandio Bastos from Portugal and Hrvoje Golubić from Croatia respectively.

‘Amandio’s image of a boy reaching at a window for the outside world summed up the feeling many of us have had this year of having a youthful excitement to once again be outside playing and exploring,’ said a Sony representative.
