The on-screen keyboard doesn't appear on my TV even when a text box is selected

IMPORTANT: This article applies only to specific products and/or operating systems. Check Applicable Products and Categories for details.

There are different reasons why the on-screen keyboard on your TV may not appear, even after you select a text input box. It could be due to your TV settings, outdated software, missing updates, or certain wireless devices connected to your TV. Whatever the case, the following workarounds may be able to help.

After performing each step, restart your TV and check if the on-screen keyboard appears.

    Reset (restart) your TV

A TV reset can help resolve different TV issues, including software issues and unresponsive remote commands. Keep in mind the reset method will depend on your TV type.

Don't know your TV type? Refer to this article for details: How to check if your BRAVIA TV is a Google TV, Android TV™, or other TV.

Remove all wireless devices from your TV

In general, Sony's Google and Android TVs can recognise the majority of USB and Bluetooth keyboards and mouse accessories. However, some functions may not operate as expected, and there's a chance the on-screen keyboard will not appear.

If you have a wireless receiver (USB or Bluetooth) connected to the TV, it may recognise the receiver as a USB keyboard and trick the TV into thinking you don't need the virtual (on-screen) keyboard. To resolve this issue, remove the USB or Bluetooth receiver from the TV, and check if the on-screen keyboard appears.

    Check the keyboard settings

Sometimes, your keyboard settings could be the issue. Make sure your current keyboard is set to Gboard, or that Google voice typing is disabled (depending on your TV model).

    1. Press the Quick Settings (spanner or gear)  or HOME button.
    2. Select  Settings.
    3. The next steps will depend on your TV menu options:
Note: If Device Preferences is not shown on your TV menu, skip it and proceed to the next step.
      • Select System → Keyboard → Current keyboard → Gboard.
      • Select Device Preferences → Keyboard → Current keyboard → Gboard.
      • Select Device Preferences → Keyboard → Manage keyboards → Turn on Gboard.
      • Select Device Preferences → Keyboard → Manage keyboards → Disable Google voice typing.

    Check for software updates

Sony provides software updates from time to time to enhance functionality and improve your overall TV experience. The easiest way to receive software updates is to download them to your TV using an Internet connection.

You can check for available software updates using your remote control buttons or the Google Play Store.

    Notes:

    • When Automatically check for update is disabled, your TV can't receive notifications even when a software update is available.
    • If you can't connect to a network, you can still update your TV software using a USB storage device.

    Use the Leanback Keyboard

Gboard is often the default on-screen keyboard for newer TVs, whereas older TVs may have the Leanback Keyboard as the default.

If Gboard is causing issues, switching to the Leanback Keyboard in your TV settings may help resolve them.

    1. Press the HOME button on your remote control.
    2. Select  Settings.
    3. Select Keyboard in the System Preferences category.
    4. Select Leanback Keyboard in the Current keyboard category.

Note: If you still have issues, you can try installing a third-party keyboard app (e.g. LeanKeyboard) as an alternative.

    Uninstall Google Keyboard updates

If the Leanback Keyboard option is not available, try the following workaround to revert the Google Keyboard to its default condition.

    Perform a factory reset

If the previous steps fail, but you can access the TV settings, a factory data reset may be what your TV needs.

IMPORTANT: A factory reset erases your current settings and requires you to set up the TV again.

Follow these steps to factory reset your TV:

    1. On your remote control, press the Quick Settings (spanner or gear), HOME, or ACTION MENU button.
    2. Select  Settings.
    3. The next steps will depend on your TV menu options:
      • Select System → About → Reset → Factory data reset → Erase everything → Yes.
      • Select Device Preferences → Reset → Factory data reset → Erase everything → Yes
      • Select Storage & reset → Factory data reset → Erase everything → Yes
    4. The factory reset may take a few minutes. Once it's complete, the TV will start the initial setup.
