What recording formats are there and what are the differences?
Sony products offer a variety of recording formats so that you can choose the best one for your purpose and workflow.
In addition to the compression method, the following variables determine a format’s image quality. Please use this information as a reference when selecting the most suitable format!
| Intra / Long GOP Compression |
Intra-frame compression compresses each frame individually, providing better editing flexibility and quicker response. Long GOP (Group of Pictures) compression compresses across multiple frames, making it more efficient in reducing file size. |
| Color Sampling |
Color sampling refers to how much color information is recorded. The more evenly color data is sampled, the better the color reproduction is, and the cleaner the result is when techniques like green screen compositing are used. The best is RGB 4:4:4 (full-color information), followed by Y:Pb:Pr 4:2:2, and then 4:2:0. |
| Bit Depth |
Bit depth describes the gradation of brightness information. 8-bit images have 256 brightness levels, while 10-bit images have 1024 levels, resulting in smoother transitions from light to dark. |
| Bitrate |
The bitrate is the amount of data recorded per second, usually expressed in Mbps (Megabits per second). For the same format, a higher bitrate generally means higher image quality. |
