How to troubleshoot Bluetooth sound and connection issues

Connecting Bluetooth devices makes it easy to stream audio wirelessly. However, connection issues can still occur, and it’s frustrating when your device won’t pair or when the sound becomes distorted or cuts out after you connect.
To understand why these problems happen, it's helpful to know the difference between Bluetooth pairing and a Bluetooth connection.
Bluetooth pairing is the initial setup process where two devices discover and authenticate each other — kind of like saving someone's contact details in your phone. A Bluetooth connection, on the other hand, happens after pairing, when the devices recognise each other and link up to share data, similar to making a call or sending a text. In other words, you need to pair your devices before they can connect automatically in the future.
Whether you're pairing Bluetooth devices for the first time, checking the connection status, or troubleshooting audio problems, this guide will walk you through the steps to resolve common Bluetooth sound and connectivity issues.

First, let's make sure your devices can successfully connect via Bluetooth, as connection issues can cause sound disruptions.
The suggestions below can help improve Bluetooth connectivity and reduce sound issues.
✓ Confirm that the devices you want to pair support the A2DP Bluetooth profile.
-
A2DP is necessary if you want to stream high-quality audio (e.g. from a smartphone to wireless headphones or speakers).
✓ Ensure your Bluetooth devices are sufficiently charged (at least 20-30 percent).
-
The pairing procedure may fail if one or more of your devices has low battery power. This means you won't be able to stream audio from one device to the other.
✓ Make sure the two connecting devices are located near each other.
-
Most devices should be placed no more than 10 metres away from each other. Beyond that, you will start to hear noise and sound disturbances, and the connection will likely cut off.
✓ If you notice the sound dropping from your Bluetooth earbuds or headphones, try the following:
-
Earbuds: Put your earbuds back in the charging case for a few seconds.
-
Headphones: Turn your headphones off and on again.
✓ Remove any surrounding obstacles.
-
Obstacles such as metal objects, concrete walls, or other wave-emitting devices can affect the Bluetooth connectivity range.

How to know if your Bluetooth device is connected
Select your device below and follow the steps to check the status of your Bluetooth connection.
Notes:
- You can easily connect your headphones or wireless speaker to your smartphone and check the Bluetooth connection status via the Sony | Sound Connect mobile app.
- Not all Bluetooth devices have the same Bluetooth icon status indicator. For devices that aren't compatible with the Sony | Sound Connect app, you will need to go to your device’s Bluetooth settings and check what Bluetooth device is currently connected (if any).
- When pairing a Bluetooth device to your TV: Depending on the TV app used, or the Bluetooth audio device connected, some app operations performed from the Bluetooth audio device may not work. In such cases, use the TV remote control to operate the app.
