Preparation

This lens system software update can only be performed when the lens is attached to the camera. Before starting the update, make sure the camera is turned off, and then attach the target lens to the camera body.

Check the System Software Version of Your Lens

Follow the instructions below to check the lens system software version:

1. Select Menu → Setup → Setup Option → Version.
2. The lens system software version is displayed.
   

Notes:

• If the system software version is Ver. 01, the update is required.
• If the date and time setting screen appears when you turn on the camera, be sure to set the date and/or time to the correct values.
• If you are using the QX series, start the Lens System Software Updater on your computer and check the lens system software version by running the update.

The latest version of the lens system software update is compatible with the following Macintosh operating systems:

• macOS 15
• macOS 14
• macOS 13

Computer Hardware

The latest version of the lens system software update is compatible with the following hardware:

• Hard disk space: 200 MB or more
• RAM: 512 MB or more

• Camera power source: A fully charged rechargeable battery pack or dedicated AC adapter (sold separately)

  • The update can only be performed when the remaining battery level is (three bars) or more. We recommend you use a fully charged battery or the dedicated AC adapter (sold separately).
  • Detach the vertical grip before you update the lens system software.

Important Notice

• This lens system software update can only be performed when the lens is attached to the E-mount body camera. You cannot perform the lens system software update using another camera.
• Attach the lens to the camera before performing the lens system software update. Make sure the camera is turned off.
• Do not let your computer go into Sleep mode.
• Ensure that all devices other than the computer are disconnected.
• Do not remove the battery during the update; otherwise, the camera may not operate due to the sudden power shutdown.
• Please close any other applications before updating.
• Remove the memory card from the camera beforehand.
• Please do not connect the camera to the computer at this point.
• Please use a computer connected to the internet.

For α Interchangeable Lens Cameras

• When performing the lens system software update, please use a fully charged rechargeable battery pack or the dedicated AC adapter (sold separately).

For Professional/Camera — Broadcast & Production

• Use the dedicated AC Adapter when updating.
• Please ensure that the battery and AC adapter are removed before the lens with the update is attached.

Confirm the USB Connection Settings:

• Following the instructions in the Lens System Software Updater window
  1. Select Menu → Setup → USB → USB Connection Mode.
  2. Check that Mass Storage has been selected.
     If a different mode is selected, change it to Mass Storage.
  

For Mac Computers with an Apple Silicon Processor

• For Mac computers with an Apple Silicon processor, please change the security policy.
• The About This Mac screen will show an item labeled Chip, followed by the name of the chip.
• Refer to the How to change the security policy on Mac computers with Apple Silicon article.
• For Mac computers with an Intel processor, this step is not necessary.

How to Download the Sony Camera Driver:

1. Visit the Sony Camera Driver download page and download the appropriate driver.
2. Click the Download button.
3. After reading the disclaimer, click Download.
4. Save the file to the computer desktop (recommended).

How to Download the Lens System Software Updater:

1. Click the Download button.
2. After reading the disclaimer, click Download.
   Note: The Update_SELP16502V2D.dmg file will start downloading.
3. Save the file to the computer desktop (recommended).

Once the file has downloaded successfully, you're ready to install the update.

Step 1: Install the Sony Camera Driver

1. Close all programs currently running on your computer.
2. Double-click the Camera_Driver_2110a.dmg file you downloaded. Do not connect the camera at this point.
   Note: If you have connected the camera to a computer, disconnect it before following the procedure.
3. The Sony Camera Driver Installer is expanded.
4. Double-click the SonyCameraDriver.pkg icon.
   
5. The installer screen opens. Proceed as instructed.
   
6. You will be prompted to allow the system to start the installation. Type the password for the administrative account.
   
   Notes:
   • If the operating system displays the System Extension Blocked dialog message, click the Open Security Preferences button. The macOS Privacy & Security screen opens.
     Note: The actual dialog message will vary depending on the operating system version. Extension here refers to Sony Camera Driver.
   • If the operating system does not display the System Extension Blocked dialog message, go to Step 2: Start the Lens System Software Updater.
   
7. Press the Allow button in Privacy and Security of System Settings. If you cannot find the Allow button, try scrolling down the screen.
   
8. If you are asked to restart after clicking the Allow button, please restart and return to the beginning of the update procedure.
9. If the Privacy & Security screen does not disappear, please close the window.

Step 2: Start the Lens System Software Updater

1. Double-click the Update_SELP16502V2D.dmg file you downloaded. Do not connect the camera at this point.
2. Double-click the Update_SELP16502V2D folder which appears on the computer desktop.
3. Double-click the LensSystemSoftwareUpdater icon. If you are asked to install Rosetta, please proceed with the installation.
   
4. To load a kernel extension, the message prompts you to allow the application to make changes. Type the password for the administrative account.
   
5. The Lens System Software Updater will start.
   
   Notes:
   • If the system is not ready to start updating, an error message appears. Take appropriate action according to the message, and then double-click the LensSystemSoftwareUpdater icon again.
   • If the message “You need to restart your computer” appears, restart the computer, and then double-click the LensSystemSoftwareUpdater icon again.
   • If the message “You need to install Sony Camera Driver” appears, perform the procedure described in Step 1, and then double-click the LensSystemSoftwareUpdater icon again.
   • If the message Check the Security & Privacy setting appears, perform steps 7, 8 and 9 in the Step 1: Install the Sony Camera Driver section, restart the operating system, and then double-click the LensSystemSoftwareUpdater icon again.
6. Turn on the camera. Connect the camera to the computer with the USB cable. The USB connection screen is displayed on the camera.
7. Click Next in the Lens System Software Updater. The Lens System Software Updater window appears on the computer and “Follow computer instructions.” appears on the camera screen.
   Note: From now on, never turn off the camera until the lens system software update is completed.
   It may take a few minutes for the screen to change depending on the camera model.

   Troubleshooting:
   • If the message “The update is not available for your model” appears, check if the lens system software file you are trying to install is the correct file for the lens that is attached to your camera.
     If the Lens System Software Updater is running, you will need to close the updater, disconnect the USB cable, turn off the camera, and go back to Step 2.
   • If the message “Could not find camera with the lens for this update mounted” appears, check if your camera is listed in the Relevant Products section and connected to the computer with a USB cable.
8. Click Next in the Lens System Software Updater. The current version and the version after the update appear on the lower left part of the screen. If the current lens system software version is Ver. 02, the update is not required. In this case:
   1. Stop the USB connection and click Finish.
   2. Turn off the camera.
   3. Remove the battery pack and/or the AC adapter.
   4. Reinsert the battery or reconnect the AC adapter.
   5. Turn on the camera.
   • An update is required

9. Confirm the Current version is Ver. 01, and then click Next. The data is transferred to the camera (approximately 5 seconds).
   Note: Never turn off the camera or disconnect the USB cable while updating.
   
10. When the data transfer is finished, the following screen appears:
    
    Click Finish.
11. The update process starts and the progress bar is displayed on the camera (approximately 40 seconds).
    
12. The update process is finished when the “Lens update complete” message is displayed on the camera. If you are using the QX series, the screen disappears when the update process is finished.
    
13. Disconnect the USB cable.
    Note: After the update is finished, turn off the camera, remove the battery pack and/or the AC adapter, reinsert the battery or reconnect the AC adapter, and then turn on the camera.

Step 3: Confirm That the Lens System Software Version is Ver.02

1. On the camera, select Menu → Setup → Setup Option → Version.
2. The lens system software version is displayed.
   
   Notes:
   • For Mac computers with an Apple Silicon processor, we recommend setting the security policy back to the original setting once the update procedure is finished.
   • For Mac computers with an Intel processor, this step is not needed.
   • Refer to the How to change the security policy on Mac computers with Apple silicon article if necessary.

Questions & Answers

The Update does not Complete

If the monitor remains black for more than 2 minutes, follow these steps to troubleshoot the issue:

1. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
2. Remove the battery and AC adapter from the camera, leave it for a few minutes, and then insert the battery again or reconnect the AC adapter.
3. Restart the computer.
4. Turn on the camera and perform the installation process again.

After launching the Lens System Software Updater, the screen for confirming the version does not appear and a “Failed to update” message is displayed

If this happens, it is possible you have updated your camera in the past using the System Software Update Helper driver. Follow these steps to uninstall that software and restart the update:

1. Download the System Software Update Helper again and uninstall the driver using the uninstaller tool in the Uninstaller folder of the downloaded file.
2. After uninstalling the System Software Update Helper driver, double-click the Update_SELP16502V2D.dmg file to restart the update.
