Preparation

Check the system software version of your lens

Follow the instructions below to check the lens system software version:

  1. Select MenuSetupSetup OptionVersion.
  2. The lens system software version is displayed.

Notes:

  • If the system software version is Ver. 01, the update is required.
  • If the date and time setting screen appears when you turn on the camera, be sure to set the date and/or time to the correct values.
  • If you are using the QX series, start the Lens System Software Updater on your computer and check the lens system software version by running the update.

The latest version of the lens system software update is compatible with the following versions of Microsoft Windows:

  • Windows 11
  • Windows 10

Computer Hardware

The latest version of the lens system software update is compatible with the following hardware:

  • An Intel or AMD-based computer (ARM-based computers are not supported)
  • Hard disk space: 200 MB or more
  • RAM: 512 MB or more
    Note: Please close all other application software before updating the lens system software.

Important Notice

  • This lens system software update can only be performed when the lens is attached to the E-mount body camera. You cannot perform the lens system software update using another camera.
  • Attach the lens to the camera before performing the lens system software update. Make sure the camera is turned off.
  • Do not let your computer go into Sleep mode. In case the computer does go into Sleep mode and the update is interrupted, you will need to redo the entire update process from the start.
  • Ensure that all devices other than the computer are disconnected.
  • Do not remove the battery during the update; otherwise, the camera may not operate due to the sudden power shutdown.
  • Remove the memory card from the camera beforehand.

For α Interchangeable Lens Camera

  • When performing the lens system software update, please use a fully charged rechargeable battery pack or the dedicated AC adapter (sold separately).

For Camera — Broadcast & Production

  • When performing the lens system software update, please use the dedicated AC adapter.

For Professional Category Cameras

  • Please ensure that the battery and AC adapter are removed before the lens with the update is attached.

How to Download the Lens System Software Updater

  1. Make sure you are logged on as a user with administrative rights.
  2. After reading the disclaimer, click Download.
  3. The Update_SELP16502V2D.exe file will start downloading.
  4. Save the file to the desktop of your computer (recommended).
    Note: With the standard settings of Microsoft Edge, the update file will be saved in your Downloads folder. Click the Desktop tile from the Start screen and use File Explorer to find the downloaded file in the Downloads folder.

Once the file has downloaded successfully, you're ready to install the lens system software update Ver. 02 for SELP16502.

Step 1: Start the Lens System Software Updater

  1. Close all currently running programs on your computer.
  2. Double-click the Update_SELP16502V2D.exe file you downloaded to start up the Lens System Software Updater.

    Note: The Lens System Software Updater window appears.
  3. Turn on the camera. If the camera has already been turned on, turn it off and then turn it on again.
    Note: According to the instructions for the Lens System Software Updater:
    1. On the camera, select MenuSetupUSBUSB Connection Mode.
    2. Check if Mass Storage is selected. (If you are using the QX series, this step is not necessary.)
      If a different mode is selected, change it to Mass Storage.
  4. Remove the memory card from the camera beforehand. Connect the camera to the computer with the supplied USB cable.
    Note: If an error message appears on the computer screen, please try the following methods:
    • Disconnect the USB cable and reconnect it.
    • If the computer has multiple USB terminals, try another terminal.
  5. Confirm (USB icon) is displayed on the task tray in the lower right corner of the computer screen.
    Note: If (USB icon) is not displayed on the task tray, please proceed to the next step.
  6. Click Next on the Lens System Software Updater. The Lens System Software Updater window appears on the computer and the Follow computer instructions message appears on the camera screen.
    Note: From now on, never turn off the camera until the lens system software update is completed.
    It may take a few minutes for the screen to change depending on the camera model.

    Troubleshooting:
    • If the message “The update is not available for your model” appears, check if the system software file you are trying to install is the correct file for the lens that is attached to your camera. If the Lens System Software Updater is running, you will need to close the updater, disconnect the USB cable, turn off the camera, and go back to Step 1.
    • If the message “Could not find camera with the lens for this update mounted” appears, check if your camera is listed in the Relevant Products section and connected to the computer with a USB cable.
  7. Click Next on the Lens System Software Updater. The current version and the version after the update appear on the lower left part of the screen. If the current lens system software version is Ver. 02, the update is not required. In this case:
    1. Stop the USB connection and click Finish.
    2. Turn off the camera.
    3. Remove the battery pack and/or the AC adapter.
    4. Reinsert the battery or reconnect the AC adapter.
    5. Turn on the camera.
    • An update is required
      The [Current Version] on the lower left of the screen is showing 01 or earlier, and the [Version after the update] is showing 02.
    • An update is not required
      The [Current Version] and the [Version after the update] on the lower left of the screen are showing 02.
  8. Confirm the Current version is Ver. 01, and then click Next. The data is transferred to the camera (approximately 5 seconds).
    Note: Never turn off the camera or disconnect the USB cable while updating.
  9. When the data transfer is finished, the following screen appears:
    Run the update screen
    Click Finish.
  10. The update process starts and the progress bar is displayed on the camera (approximately 40 seconds).
  11. The update process is finished when the Lens update complete message is displayed on the camera. If you are using the QX series, the screen disappears when the update process is finished.
  12. Click (USB icon) on the task tray in the lower right corner of the computer screen to stop the USB connection.
    Note: If (USB icon) is not displayed on the task tray, please proceed to the next step.
  13. Disconnect the USB cable.
    Note: After the update is finished, turn off the camera, remove the battery pack and/or the AC adapter, reinsert the battery or reconnect the AC adapter, and then turn on the camera.

Step 2: Confirm the Lens System Software Version is Ver.02

  1. On the camera, select MenuSetupSetup OptionVersion.
  2. The lens system software version is displayed.
    The version will be displayed in the center of the screen.

Questions & Answers

The Update does not Complete

If the camera monitor remains black for more than 10 minutes, follow these steps to troubleshoot the issue:

  1. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
  2. Remove the battery and AC adapter from the camera, leave it for a few minutes, and then insert the battery again or reconnect the AC adapter.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Turn on the camera and perform the installation process again.
