  • When using PXW-FS7M2, please follow the procedure according to the instruction manual of PXW-FS7M2.

Important

  • This system software updatecan only be performed when the lens is attached to a camera which has "Fast Hybrid AF" function.- You cannot perform the system software update using another camera.
  • Please make sure to attach the lens to the camera before performing the system software update.- Before you attach the lens to the camera, please make sure to turn off the camera.

  • Benefits and improvements:
    • Enables "Fast Hybrid AF" function.- Without this lens update, the camera will use the normal contrast-detection AF even if Fast Hybrid AF is selected.
      Note: The firmware of NEX-5R or NEX-6 camera also needs to be updated in addition to this system software update.

System Requirements

Operating Systems

The latest version of the system software update is compatible with most commonly used versions of Microsoft Windows:

  • Windows® 10
  • Windows® 8.1
  • Windows® 7 SP1
  • Windows® Vista* SP2
    Note:
    *Starter edition is not supported.

Computer hardware

  • Hard disk space: 200MB or more
  • RAM: 512MB or more
    Note: Please close all other application software before updating the system software.
  • Power source for the camera: Fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-FW50 or AC adaptor AC-PW20 (sold separately)- The update can be performed only when the remaining battery level is three marks or more. We recommend that you use a fully charged battery or the AC adaptor AC-PW20 (sold separately).
  • USB cable supplied with the camera- Update functionality is not guaranteed with any other USB cable.

Install

Important notes:
  • When performing the system software update, please use a fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-FW50 or the AC adaptor AC-PW20 (sold separately).
  • Do not remove the battery pack or AC adaptor during the update; otherwise, the camera may become inoperable due to the sudden power shutdown.
  • Remove the memory card from the camera beforehand.
  • Please make sure to attach the lens to the camera before performing the system software update.- Before you attach the lens to the camera, please make sure to turn off the camera.

Follow the instruction below to check the system software version.

  1. Select [Menu] -> [Setup] -> [Version] on the camera.
  2. The system software version is displayed.- If the system software version of your lens is Ver.02 or later, the update is not required.

1. Download the update file

  1. Please save the downloaded file on your computer's Desktop (recommended).

  2. Note for Windows 8 users:

    Under the initial settings of Internet Explorer, the update file will be saved in the [Downloads] folder. Click the [Desktop] tile from the Start screen and find the downloaded file in the [Downloads] folder by using Explorer.

2. Start up System software Updater

  1. Close all currently running programs on your computer.
  2. Double-click the downloaded file to start up the System software Updater.

3. Check the USB connection mode on the camera

  1. Turn on the camera. - If the camera has already been turned on, turn it off and then turn it on again.
  2. According to the instruction on System software Updater, select [Menu] -> [Setup] -> [USB Connection] on the camera, and check if [Mass Storage] is selected.
    If the mode other than [Mass Storage] is selected, please select [Mass Storage].

4. Connect the camera to the computer.

Remove the memory card from the camera beforehand.

  1. After confirming the LCD screen of the camera is not turned off, connect the camera to the computer with the supplied USB cable.
    Depending on the setting of "Power Saving Start Time", the camera goes into power saving mode. If the camera is entering power saving mode and the LCD screen of the camera is turned off, press the shutter button halfway to exit power saving mode and connect the camera to the computer with the supplied USB cable.

    If an error message appears on the computer screen, please try the following methods:
    • Disconnect the USB cable from the camera, then reconnect the USB cable.
    • If there are another USB terminal with the computer, reconnect the USB cable to another USB terminal.
  2. Confirm is displayed on the task tray at the lower right corner of the computer screen. - If is not displayed on the task tray, please proceed to the next step.
  3. After confirming the above, click [Next] on System software Updater. Figure 4 appears on System software Updater, and Figure 5 appears on the LCD screen of the camera. - From now on, never turn off the camera until the system software update is completed.

    • When the message "The update is not available for your model." appears on the screen, check if the System software Updater is the correct file for the lens which is attached to the camera.
    • When the message above appears although the correct System software Updater is running, close the System software Updater, disconnect the USB cable, turn off the camera, and then go back to the step 2 "Start up System software Updater".
    • When the message "Could not find the camera with the lens for this update mounted."appears on the screen, check if the camera has "Fast Hybrid AF" function and if the camera is connected to the computer with USB cable.

5. Check if the update is required

  1. After confirming the screens on Figures 4 and 5, click [Next]. The current version and the version after the update appear on the lower left part of the screen. (Figure 6).
  2. After confirming the screen on Figure 6, click [Next] (Current version] is [Ver.01]).- If the screen on Figure 7 appears, the update is not required. According to the message, stop the USB connection and click [Finish]. Turn off the camera, remove the battery pack or the AC adaptor, and then turn on the camera again.

6. Start the update

  1. Click [Run] to start the update.- The progress bar appears while transferring data (approximately 5 seconds).

    Note: Never turn off the camera nor disconnect the USB cable while updating
  2. When transferring data is completed, the following screen appears. Click [Finish].
  3. The update process starts and the progress bar is displayed on the camera screen (approximately 30 seconds).

7. Complete the update

  1. The update process is finished when the "Lens update complete." message is displayed on the camera screen.
  2. Click on the task tray at the lower right corner of the computer screen to stop the USB connection.- If is not displayed on the task tray, please proceed to the next step
  3. Disconnect the USB cable. - After finished the update, turn off the camera, remove the battery pack or the AC adaptor, and then turn on the camera again.

8. Check the system software version again and confirm that the lens system software version is Ver.02
