How to troubleshoot fan noise on the SA/SB Series

Your VAIO needs to vent the heat generated by the processor and graphics chip. The fan is controlled by the temperature of these components, which in turn depends on their workload.

While it is normal that the fan runs as much as needed, you may prefer minimizing the noise produced over maximizing the available performance.

First, we ensure that the cooling system is running as quiet as possible:
    1. Ensure that BIOS version R2085H4 (or higher) is installed:
      1. Click Start, type VAIO Control Center in the Start Search box, and then click VAIO Control Center in the Programs list.
      2. Navigate to System Information.
      3. If the BIOS version is R2085H4 (or higher), proceed to step 2.
      4. Otherwise, download and install the new version, via
    • The download section of this website.
    • VAIO Update on your VAIO computer.

      1. Slide the performance selector hardware switch to STAMINA (see the user manual for further details about the performance switch). If fan noise is still an issue or if you wish to run your notebook in SPEED mode instead, proceed to step 3.

      2. Ensure the performance selector switch is set to SPEED and manually change the Thermal Control Strategy to Silent Mode in VAIO Control Center:
        1. Click Start, type VAIO Control Center in the Start Search box, and then click VAIO Control Center in the Programs list.
        2. Navigate to Power Options.
        3. Select Silent Mode and click OK.
