Understanding white and ambient noise during calls on noise-canceling headphones using Sony's Sidetone feature

IMPORTANT: This article applies only to specific products and/or operating systems. Check Applicable Products and Categories for details.

During a call on the headphones, the headphones' microphones pick up ambient sound regardless of the settings of the Ambient Sound Control function. This is an intentional feature to enhance the call experience and not a malfunction.

Thanks to the Sidetone function, the noise canceling function of your headphones works differently during a call than when playing music. If you hear ambient sound, headphone operation sound, or white noise (i.e., a small electrical noise with continuous static sound) during a call, that is also an effect of Sidetone and not a malfunction.

    How does Sidetone work?

Note:  For WF-1000XM5 only: The Sidetone function can be turned off. To turn off the function, in the Sony | Headphones Connect app, select the System tab and set the Capture Voice During a Phone Call setting to Off.
