Why is only the left half of the histogram displayed when recording with S-Log2 or S-Log3?
When recording a subject with a small luminance differential using S-Log, the histogram is displayed as if it is compressed and the right side of the histogram is rarely displayed.
S-Log2 and S-Log3 are gamma curves optimised under the assumption that grading will be performed in the post-production process. S-Log2 and S-Log3 let you record with a wide dynamic range. When recording with S-Log2 or S-Log3, the camera controls the exposure differently than usual to achieve this wide dynamic range.
As a result, if you record a subject with a normal luminance differential, it is often recorded as a compressed signal roughly the size of the left half of the histogram (when recording a subject with a large luminance differential or recording with different exposure settings, the histogram may also appear on the right half).
When recording with S-Log3, no luminance is distributed along the right edge of the histogram since the maximum luminance for S-Log3 is 94% in video output.
