Troubleshooting for when the camera turns off automatically

Under certain circumstances, it is normal that the camera turns off automatically. For instance, If you do not operate the camera for given period of time, the camera turns to power saving mode and nearly shuts down. To cancel the power save, operate the camera, such as pressing the shutter button halfway down. You can set the Power Save time in the setup menu of your camera.

Check the Power-Off settings

To prevent the battery from discharging, check the Power Save setting of the camera equipped with an Auto Power Off function.

NOTE: The setting name may differ depending on the model.

• If Power Save is set to Standard or Max, the monitor will become dark and then turn off to prevent battery consumption if the camera is not operated for a certain amount of time (Auto Power Off).
• If the camera is equipped with an organic EL display, the monitor will become dark to prevent burning of images into the screen even if Power Save is set to Off, but the power will turn off.
• If the monitor is darkened, touch the screen (for models equipped with a touch panel) or operate the camera to resume operation.

Check the operation environment

When using the camera in a cold environment, condensation may occur when the camera is then moved to a warmer environment, preventing the camera from operating normally. If you have used your camera outside, wait a few hours in room temperature until the condensation has gone.

For some products, The camera automatically turns off when its temperature becomes extremely high in a hot environment. This is a specification to protect the camera. When the temperature of the camera becomes too high, a yellow overheating warning icon appears on the LCD screen. In this case, turn off the camera and leave it for a while to let the temperature go down.

Check the shooting set-up

When shooting movies or when taking pictures in burst mode, the sensor temperature rises. When temperature reaches a certain level the camera turns off automatically as a protective measure. This is a normal behaviour. Allow the camera cool down for one hour.

Check the battery

• The battery can cause a sudden power-off of the camera, for example if it is not fully charged.
• Always use genuine Sony batteries. Make sure the battery comes from an authorized Sony dealer.
• Let the battery charge several hours before inserting it in the camera.
