Redefining Versatility

with the Sony FE 50-150mm f/2 GM

Crina Popescu is a photographer, art director and teacher and if she had to describe herself in one word, it would be 'unconventional'. With campaigns for international brands, photography and editing are her two creative hands. Her work has helped brands grow and for her, the success of her collaborators is the ultimate reward, as her life motto is ‘always growing together’.

When I take the camera in my hands, my goal is to capture the best version of whatever is in front of me. Whether it’s a product, a model or my children, I just love sculpting them with the best light.

My studio is my creative home and my team and I organise shoots, events, and workshops. One question that I'm often asked in my workshops is 'which lens can you recommend to cover most studio situations?' and I usually respond by saying there's no such lens. But that was until I had the opportunity to try the new Sony FE 50-150mm f/2 GM.

At the time of writing, I've been using the lens for 4 weeks and it hasn't been off my camera. I've shot fashion, portraits and even product photography, without any compromise to my usual way of working.

Given the large f/2 aperture, I wasn't expecting it to be a lightweight lens, but it wasn't actually as heavy as I thought. In fact, it's about the same weight as my older FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS. The autofocus speed was impressive and coupled with my Alpha 7R V, it hit focus every single time, even when I was working quickly.

As a commercial photographer, my work often goes to large size printing, so it’s vital for me to deliver impeccably sharp images in order to look good on print. I shot just about everything at full aperture and was extremely impressed with the sharpness.

The focal length had me intrigued initially, I must admit, but after shooting for a while I realised that the lens had the perfect range for quickly switching between a full-length body shot and a close-up portrait. The constant aperture made this even easier as I didn't have to adjust the exposure.

For me, a lens like this covers the perfect range for studio work and the performance is superb. In the short time I’ve had it, it’s quickly become indispensable to my work and I can see a long and happy relationship in its future!
