Exploring and creating is the dream of many aspiring photographers and filmmakers, but making that dream a reality isn't something Denis Barbas takes for granted.
'Sometimes I just stop and think about it; why do I do this? How did I get here? Picking up my first camera and pursuing this passion has changed my life.'
Reflecting on what drives him, Denis was inspired to create the short film 'Embracing Discomfort' shot with the Sony FX3 during his glacial Icelandic adventure, Denis explains 'I wanted to test the FX3 to the limits. It is easy to film in beautiful sunny weather; everyone does that. But I wanted to do something different: push the camera and myself in harsh conditions. The winter in Iceland can be tough, some winds can be strong enough to blow a car off the road. Then there are the freezing temperatures. Your hands can be frozen, even in gloves, and it isn't easy to press the buttons on the camera to film. But that is what I wanted. I wanted to be outside my comfort zone.'
Despite the challenges of preparing for his glacial hike, with Denis revealing that ‘you can plan all you want, but when you get there, and the weather gets bad, everything can change instantly', the hike on the glacier provided the best moments of adventure for Denis and his FX3. 'We stopped on the glacier in the middle of nowhere, set up a hammock and made coffee with the glacial water. It felt awesome. You don't get to do it every day, and I will remember that moment for the rest of my life.'
The Sony FX3 could keep up with the challenges and extreme environment that Denis put it through. 'I usually hike a lot,' says Denis, 'and when hiking and filming in such harsh environments, I want a camera with a small body but with the best possible image quality. That is why I think that the Sony FX3 is the best.'
One of the reasons that Denis loves using the FX3 is its ability to preview or embed different LUTs, a feature that was added to the camera via a firmware update.
'The firmware updates are one of the best things that Sony does; not only does Sony care about new customers but it improves cameras for existing users. I have a particular style for colour grading, and I can now embed my LUTs and see what the footage would look like when editing later. It makes it easier for me to dial in the right settings when shooting in S-log3 and get the perfect exposure for post-production.'
Mounted on the FX3 was either a Sony FE 24-70mm F/2.8 GM II, which Denis used for about 85% of the video, whilst the FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II was used for the remainder. Once again, the focus was on keeping everything as simple and lightweight as possible for the difficult glacial hikes.
'I only had these two lenses with me and because of the lens-based SteadyShot stabilisation and the in-camera SteadyShot stabilisation, I could leave my gimbal at home and stay lightweight. The image produced is super stable, but then I can also tweak it when editing or turn all of the stabilisation off completely and use Sony Catalyst Browse software to stabilise it when editing. It's a game changer!'
Denis' favourite shot of the video was captured with the FE 24-70mm lens at the 70mm focal length.
I shot the water shot in 4K at 120fps for the slow motion. I wanted to get snow in the foreground, so I shot at 70mm from a distance to capture these large chunks of snow falling close to the lens. It wasn't an easy shot. We had to wait for the snow, and then the spray from the waterfall was also flying in all directions. I don't like using gloves when shooting as I like to feel the camera, but it was so cold and wet that I couldn't keep my hands out of the gloves for more than 10 seconds at a time. But I am so happy with that shot. It is my favourite. It is so dramatic."
Denis’s videography from his Icelandic adventure underlined why the FX3 is the best video camera for videographers. 'It's one of the best cameras when it comes to image quality and low light scenarios. I know I have the same image quality as some of the bigger cameras, like the FX6, in a small body that's easy to carry around. And that's what ultimately made me choose the FX3.'
"Life is too short to play it safe. Dream big, take risks and do what makes you happy!"
