What is High-Resolution Audio?

The phrase High Resolution Audio refers to a collection of digital processes and formats for music, that allow the encoding and playback of music using higher sampling rates than the standards used in CDs. The graphs below illustrate the greater frequency with which original analogue soundwaves are sampled to prepare High Resolution Audio, as compared to CDs. There is no single standard for High Resolution Audio, but the most commonly used specs are 24bit/96kHz and 24bit/192kHz. The result? Simply the use of much more of the data contained in original analogue recordings, to produce digital music files.

Better quality sound – however you listen

Having developed High-Res Audio products, we had to make sure you could still store and enjoy thousands of tracks in the same high quality sound. That’s why we’ve used a range of compression types:

DSD(DFF) – used in professional equipment for the manufacture of Super Audio CDs

DSD(DSF) – PC-friendly format created for use in VAIO® PCs

WAV – audio file format developed for Windows®

AIFF – developed audio file format for Macintosh computers

FLAC – enables encoded (compressed) audio data to be decoded and restored to its original state, affording what is called “lossless compression”

ALAC – commonly known as “Apple Lossless” is lossless compression technology.
