The Berliner Singakademie on Unter den Linden is home to the Maxim Gorki Theatre, Berlin's smallest city theatre! Established in 1952 as a contemporary theatre, the Maxim Gorki became a city theatre in the best sense of the term for the East Berliners — with a critical and always slightly dissident approach.

The building has witnessed history unfolding since its construction between 1823 and 1827 as the home of the "Berliner Singakademie" — Schinkel's design drafts were used as a basis for building the theatre. Artistic directors such as Albert Hetterle, Bernd Wilms and more recently Armin Petras have used vastly differing means to show that an extremely contemporary heart is beating behind the theatre's classical facade.

Anyone who delves into the history of the Maxim Gorki Theatre in more detail will quickly recognise the special significance of this long-standing establishment in Berlin's theatrical landscape.

New artistic director Shermin Langhoff, the former successful director of the Ballhaus Naunynstraße theatre, and her dramatic advisor Jens Hillje are planning to take the theatre in a new direction, as the Maxim Gorki is a theatre that has always been conscious of its post-migrant environment. This links in with the traditional view of the Gorki as a contemporary theatre. With a new artistic director, a new company, a new design and new technology, the Maxim Gorki Theatre is poised to enter the spotlight of Berlin's theatre scene once more.

"Over the course of the realignment, nothing was left to chance with regard to the technology either, which is why we opted for what our research showed to be the best digital wireless system currently available on the market! The Sony DWX Digital Wireless is a powerful, reliable and future-proof microphone system that makes it possible to achieve a new level of quality and versatility during the technical and creative implementation of productions," explains Maik Voß, Head of the Sound Department.

It will be exciting to see what this historical theatre will stage over the coming years, as television stars often start their careers as stage actors.
