Why does my Xperia smartphone heat up?

    All smartphones warm up or overheat to varying degrees depending on the situation or activity that caused it. It’s important to distinguish whether the phone is warm, which is very common, or hot, causing it to shut down. 

    Using certain apps or functions for extended periods can warm or overheat a smartphone, which is normal. It’s also common for the temperature to vary while using different apps or functions. The prime culprit for this temperature variation is the processing power demanded by certain apps or functions. Luckily, all Sony smartphones automatically protect themselves against temperatures harmful to you and the phone itself.

    What levels of smartphone warm up are safe?

    All Sony smartphones are compliant with the IEC 62368-1 heat window. This is a heat standard that a smartphone operates within a certain and safe heat window at all times. Sony phones power off automatically when the temperature is nearing the upper limit of the certified heat window to prevent harm to you or the phone itself. 

    Why does my smartphone heat up and power off?

    The more processing power an app or function requires, the more heat is generated. A warm environment or a long period of direct sunlight can also warm up the phone. 
    As the first line of defence, the phone automatically tries to manage processing power and temperature by reducing functions such as the screen’s refresh rate and brightness. 
    A power off is the phone’s final defence when the temperature reaches the upper end of the certified heat window. This automatic shutdown is intentional to ensure the phone returns to an efficient operating window. It will only happen when the phone nears its upper heat limit and the cause of the overheating continues.

    Examples of functions that require more processor power:

    • 5G streaming (e.g., livestreaming content).
    • Using higher Frames Per Second (FPS) for content, e.g., during gameplay.
    • Watching content in higher resolutions.
    • Using the camera to shoot videos for extended periods.
    • Higher screen brightness.

    How to reduce or limit warm up and power offs

    The easiest way to avoid warm ups is to keep your smartphone’s software up to date. This ensures any common issues causing unnecessary overheating are corrected. 

    It’s worth applying some proactive tips to reduce unnecessary warm up.

    • Update the smartphone software. 
    • Install a thermal monitor app to monitor the phone's internal temperature and understand which app or function is causing the overheating. 
    • Avoid leaving the phone in direct sunlight (e.g. outdoor table, car dashboard or window sill).
    • Turn off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or GPS when not in use.
    • Reduce multitasking (close apps that aren’t in use to avoid power drain due to updates occurring in the background).
    • Reduce screen brightness.

    Does your smartphone still feel warm? If it’s only warm, there’s no need to worry as it’s normal, and there’s no benefit to trying to cool it down.
    Is it hot to the touch? There’s also no need to worry, but it’s time to let it cool down to avoid an automatic power-off. 

    Try the following reactive tips if it applies to your situation:

    • Keep the smartphone away from direct sunlight.
    • Lay your phone on a cool surface (the surface absorbs the heat and brings the temperature down).
    • Stop video recording. 
    • Take a break from gaming.
    • Walk around while using the phone to promote airflow and reduce temperatures.
