Thank you for your continued interest in Sony products.

Sony is always concerned about quality and customer satisfaction and therefore is offering a firmware update for DSC-HX5V camera. Please refer to the "Download and Installation" section of this page on how to download and install the firmware update.

Confirm the serial number of your camera

If the serial number falls withing the following serial number range, please perform the firmware update:

  • 1450001~1488430
  • 7452701~7525448


Confirm the firmware version of your camera

Follow the instructions below to check the firmware version of your camera.
If the firmware version is Ver.02 or later, the update is not required.

  1. Make sure the camera is turned off.
  2. Push the Play Back button on the camera while pushing the zoom key to T side.
  3. Push the Menu button on the camera.
  4. Select Setup on the camera.
  5. List of Main Setting on the camera. The firmware version is displayed as illustrated below.

Applicable Models

  • DSC-HX5V with firmware Ver.01.

    If the serial number falls withing the following serial number range, please perform the firmware update:

    1450001~1488430
    7452701~7525448

Improvements

  • This firmware update solves the issue that under certain circumstances, the clock settings of the DSC-HX5V may be reset when GPS date information is received.

System Requirements

  • Computer hardware
    • CPU: Intel® processor
    • Hard disk space: 200MB or more
    • RAM: 256MB or more
  • Power source for the camera
    • Fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-BG1 or NP-FG1
      or
      AC adaptor AC-LS5A (sold separately) and cable VMC-MD2 (sold separately)

      Note: The update can be performed only when the remaining battery level is (three marks) or more. We recommend that you use a fully charged battery or the AC adaptor AC-LS5A (sold separately) and cable VMC-MD2 (sold separately).
  • USB cable supplied with the camera. (when using battery pack).

Install

Important notes:

  • When performing the firmware update, please use a fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-BG1 or NP-FG1 or the AC adaptor AC-LS5A (sold separately).
  • Do not remove the battery or AC adaptor during the update; otherwise, the camera may become inoperable due to the sudden power shutdown.

Step 1: download the firmware updater

  1. Make sure that you are logged on as a user with administrative rights.
  2. After reading the disclaimer, click the [Download] button at the bottom of the page.
  3. The download of the [Update_DSCHX5V2.dmg] file (27 MB (28.341.940 bytes)) will start.
  4. Save the file to the desktop of your computer (recommended).

Step 2: update the firmware of your camera

  1. Close all currently running programs on your computer.
  2. Double-click the [Update_DSCHX5V2.dmg] file you downloaded. Do not connect the camera at this point.
  3. Double-click the [Update_DSCHX5V2] icon which appears on the Desktop.
  4. Double-click the [FirmwareUpdater] icon.
  5. To load a kernel extension, the message prompts you to allow the application to make changes. Type the password for the administrative account.



  6. Firmware Updater starts up.



  7. According to the instruction on the Firmware Updater window, push the Menu button, select Settings --> Main Settings --> USB Connect on the camera, and check if Mass Storage is selected.
    If another mode than Mass Storage is selected, please select Mass Storage.



  8. Connect the camera to the computer with the supplied USB cable.
    Note: When the camera is connected to the computer, the LCD screen of the camera turns off. Please proceed to the next step.
  9. After confirming the above, click Next on the Firmware Updater window. Figure 1 appears on the Firmware Updater window, and Figure 2 appears on the LCD screen of the camera.
    Note: From now on, never turn off the camera until the firmware upgrade is completed.

  10. After confirming the screens on Figures 1 and 2, click Next. The current version and the version after the upgrade appear on the lower left part of the screen. (Figure 3)
  11. After confirming [Current version] is [Ver.1], click Next.

    If [Current version] is [Ver.2], the upgrade is not required. Click Finish. Drag and Drop the icon of memory card or drive to the “Trash” icon to stop the USB connection safely.Then disconnect the USB cable.

  12. The screen on figure 4 appears.

    As instructed, disconnect the USB connection by dragging and dropping the icon of memory card or drive to the “Trash” icon. When doing this, make sure that you keep the USB cable connected.

  13. Press the center of the control button to execute the reset of the camera.


    Note: The screen turns off when the button is pressed. Please proceed to the next step.

  14. After resetting, reconnection of the camera is verified, and the screen on Figure 5 appears.
  15. Click Run to start the upgrade. The progress bar appears while upgrading.
    Note:Never turn off the camera nor disconnect the USB cable while upgrading.

  16. When the upgrade is completed, the screen on Figure 6 appears. Click Finish and disconnect the USB cable.

  17. Turn off the camera, remove the battery pack and/or the AC adapter, reinsert the battery or reconnect the AC adapter and turn on the camera.

Step 3: Confirm the firmware version of your camera is Ver.02.

  1. Make sure the camera is turned off.
  2. Push the Play Back button on the camera while pushing the zoom key to T side.
  3. Push the Menu button on the camera.
  4. Select Setup on the camera.
  5. List of Main Setting on the camera. The firmware version is displayed as illustrated below.
