System Requirements

Your firmware may already be up to date, especially if you have a new Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home theatre system model. if the version number is M21.R.0164 or higher, you do not need to update.

If you're not sure, it's easy to check which version of firmware you have:

  1. Turn on your TV and the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System. Check it's tuned to the input your Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home theatre system is connected to, so if the player is connected to the HDMI 2 socket, choose HDMI 2 as the input.
  2. Press the "FUNCTION" button repeatedly until "BD/DVD" function appears in the front panel display.
  3. If it starts to play a disc, press HOME and wait until you see the XrossMediaBar™ (XMB™) menu screen.
  4. At the XrossMediaBarTM, highlight Setup > System Settings then select ENTER using the arrow keys on the remote control.
  5. Highlight System Information and select ENTER.
  6. On the TV screen, the firmware version number looks like this: "Software Version M21.R.0164" - if the version number is M21.R.0164 or higher, you already have the most recent firmware version.

Install

There are 2 easy ways to update the firmware on your Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home theatre system:

  1. Updating over the internet 

    We recommend this method as it's the simplest way to update. It usually takes about 15-30 minutes. First set up the equipment, then download the update over the internet to your Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home theatre system.

    What you need:

    • an Ethernet cable to connect your Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home theatre system to the internet
    • an active internet connection
    • a compatible TV

    How to make sure the update goes smoothly

    Updating is usually very simple. Here's how you can make sure it goes right first time:

    • Read the instructions carefully or you could end up damaging your Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home theatre system.
    • Don't turn the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home theatre system off - or disconnect it from the power - while it's updating.
    • Don't press any buttons, except the ones mentioned in the instructions.

    Set up the equipment:

    • Turn on your TV and check it's tuned to the input your Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home theatre system is connected to. (So if the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System is connected to the HDMI 2 socket, choose HDMI 2 as the input.)
    • Connect the LAN terminal on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home theatre system to your internet source using an Ethernet cable.
    • Turn on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home theatre system - If there is a disc in the player, take it out.
    • Press the "FUNCTION" button repeatedly until "BD/DVD" function appears in the front panel display.- You can only perform the upgrade when the "BD/DVD" function is selected
    • At the XrossMediaBar TM, select Setup > System Settings using the arrow keys on the remote control and then select ENTER.
    • Select "Quick Start Mode" using the remote control - make sure that the "Quick Start Mode" is set to "Off", otherwise, the firmware upgrade may not succeed.

    Get the update:

    • At the XrossMediaBar TM, select Setup > Network Update using the arrow keys on the remote control and then select ENTER.
    • The message [A new software version has been found on the network. Do you want to update the software?] ?] is displayed on the television.
    • Select OK using the remote control, and then press ENTER.
    • The message [Update to a new software version. Never turn off power while performing update. Current version M21.R.xxxx New version M21.R.xxxx] ] is displayed on the TV. Select "START" and then press "ENTER" to proceed with software update.
    • During the update, you see the message UPDATE on the front panel display.
    • When the message DONE appears on the front panel display and, the update is complete. The player automatically turns off. - Don't use or turn off the system until the update is complete.
    • Turn the system back on.
    • Check the firmware version. If the version number is M21.R.0164, the firmware update was successful.

    Troubleshooting

    What to do if you have problems updating your Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home theatre system firmware using the internet.

    • The message ["Update failed. Insert the update disc or connect to the network to retry. If the update continues to fail, please contact the customer service center"] is displayed on the TV screen.

      Please check the following:
      1. Check that the router and all devices connected between the TV and the router are switched on.
      2. Verify that you are using the correct type of cable (straight or crossover) between the TV and the router.
      3. Check that all the cables between the TV and the router are correctly connected.
      4. Try the update again.Still not working? Please contact Sony Customer Support

      Using the remote control select "Retry"on the display and press Enter.
      If you cannot perform the network update, try the Disc Update procedure.

    • After the network upgrade process has started, the massage [Download capacity: xxxxxxKB/xxxxxKB and xx% is display in TV screen] is displayed in the lower right but the progress bar on the display has not changed
      Depending on your network connection, the network upgrade process can take a long time ( up to 60 minutes). That is why the message [Download capacity: xxxxxxKB/xxxxxKB and xx% is display in TV screen] is displayed in the lower right and the progress bar on the display will not change for a long time.

    • When running network upgrade, the television displays the message, ["Connection status cannot be confirmed cannot communicate with the server. Please try again later."] and you cannot perform the firmware upgrade.
      The problem might be with the network connection.
      1. Check the LAN cable is connected.
      2. In the network settings, check you have confirmed whether or not your Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home theatre system has its own IP address. (If you use a proxy server, type the IP address of the proxy you use - instead of the proxy host name - into the Proxy Server field.)
      3. Try the update again.

    • The power went off while the update was in progress.
      Turn the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System on and try the update again.

    • The update has been going for over 60 minutes and hasn't finished.
      If your system is connected via wireless to the network, please try to connect with a cable to the network and an try the procedure again.
      If the problem continues, the network transmission speed may be low. In that case please try to update your system following the disc procedure.

    • The message [This device is not connected to network. Perform network diagnostics in the connection server setting] is displayed on TV screen.
      Please check whether the LAN cable is connected to the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System.

    • The message [Already Updated] is displayed on TV screen.
      The firmware version currently installed on the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System is the latest version.
  2. Update via USB Memory Device and your PC


    Update to version M21.R.0164 for Blu-ray player

    We recommend you use the internet to update if you can. If not, you can use this method instead. You'll download the update to your computer, transfer it to a USB memory device, then transfer it to your Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home theatre system.

    We recommend the following operating systems:

    • Windows® Vista®, Windows® 7 or Windows® 8
    • Macintosh® OS X version 10.5 or later version

    How to make sure the update goes smoothly

    Updating is usually very simple. Here's how you can make sure it works first time:

    • Read the instructions carefully or you could end up damaging your Blu-ray player
    • Don't turn the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home theatre system off- or disconnect it from the power - while it's updating
    • Don't press any buttons, except the ones mentioned in the instructions

    Download the update to your computer:

    1. Read and agree to the terms and conditions
    2. Download the file UPDATA_M21R0164.ZIP to your computer - remembering which directory you download it to
    3. Find the file on your computer, right-click on it and click Properties. Check the size is 106 MB (111,416,842 bytes)

      File properties

    Transfer the update files to the USB storage device:

    1. Extract the file to your computer. The extracted files are called MSB21-FW.BIN, MSB21-FW.ID, MSB21-FW_MB.BIN and MSB21-FW_MB.ID
    2. Connect a compatible USB storage device to your computer. - FAT32 and NTFS are supported

    For Windows® operating system:

    1. Go to the directory where the folder was created, and Right-click the UPDATE folder
    2. From the appearing menu, click "Send To..."
    3. Click the drive that represents your USB device (e.g. Removable Disk E:)
    4. The update folder will be copied onto your USB device.

    For Mac OS® X operating system:

    1. Drag and drop UPDATE folder to the root folder of the USB device.

    Note: The update will not be performed if the file is not copied to the root directory of the USB device or if the name of the file is modified.

    Transfer the update to your Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System

    First get the equipment ready, then transfer the update to your player.

    Get the equipment ready:

    1. Turn on your TV and check it's tuned to the input your Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System is connected to. (So if the player is connected to the HDMI 2 socket, choose HDMI 2 as the input)
    2. Turn on the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System
    3. Press the FUNCTION button repeatedly until "BD/DVD" function appears in the front panel display - You can only perform the upgrade when the "BD/DVD" function is selected. If it starts to play a disc, press HOME and wait until you see the XrossMediaBar™ (XMB™) menu screen.
    4. Select "Quick Start Mode" using the remote control - make sure that the "Quick Start Mode" is set to "Off", otherwise, the firmware upgrade may not succeed.
    5. Insert the USB storage device containing the update file into USB port located on the front panel of the player

    Transfer the update:

    1. At the xross media bar(tm) menu, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select Setup - Software Updateand then press Enter
    2. Using the remote control, select Update via USB Memory, and then press the ENTER button.
    3. During the update, The message , [Update files found in the USB memory. Do you want to update the software? Current version M21.R.xxxx New version M21.R.xxxx. Do not turn off the power or remove the USB memory during the update.] is displayed on the television.
    4. Select Start using the remote control, and then press ENTER.
    5. The update starts.
    6. During the update, you see the message UPDATE on the front panel display
    7. The player will reboot itself and the update will continue. - Don't use or turn on yourself the player during this step.
    8. When the message DONE appears on the front panel display and, the update is complete. The player automatically turns off. - Don't use or turn off the system until the update is completed.
    9. Turn the system back on.
    10. Check the firmware version. If the version number is M21.R.0164, the firmware update was successful.

    Troubleshooting

    What to do if you have problems updating your Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System firmware using your PC and a disc.

    • "UPDATE" and "ERROR" are displayed alternately on the front panel display.
      1. Turn off the system and disconnect the AC power cord.
      2. Turn on the power of the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System.
      3. Take the disc out.
      4. Try the disc update procedure again.
        Still not working? Please contact Sony Customer Support

    • The power went off while the update was in progress
      Turn the player on keeping the update disc in the tray. The update will restart automatically.

    • The UPDATA_M21R0164.ZIP update file I downloaded from the update web site cannot be extracted.
      Did you download the file successfully? Try deleting the file and downloading it again.

    • The update has been going for over 30 minutes and hasn't finished
      1. Disconnect the AC power cord from the mains, then reconnect it after several minutes.
      2. Turn on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home theatre system.
      3. Try the disc update procedure again.
