About this upgrade (24/05/2011) :

This utility upgrades the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System player firmware to version 011 and provides the following benefits:


  • BD-ROM playability improvement

Benefits provided by previous upgrades and included in version 011:

  • Slow motion operation added to Blu-ray and DVD playback.
  • Single frame by frame forward operation added to Blu-ray and DVD playback.
  • Improves compatibility to enhance interactivity with some BD-ROMs.
  • BD-ROM playability improvement

Applicable models:

  • BDV-E300
  • BDV-E800W
  • BDV-E801
  • BDV-Z7

Please select the method you want to use to update your Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System:


  • Network Upgrade:
    • The Network Upgrade operation is straightforward, so it is highly recommended that you use the Network Upgrade method.
    • You will need to connect the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.

  • Please read all the information carefully and thoroughly before downloading and installing any file. Failure to follow the instructions may cause the system to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  • This utility is only for use with the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre Systems sold within Europe. Not all models are sold in all countries.
  • In order to use this upgrade method it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to an active Internet connection.
  • In order to perform the firmware upgrade, it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to a compatible television.
  • The firmware upgrade process usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on system configuration and network connection.


Instructions:

  • Before you start:
  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System is connected.
  2. Connect the LAN terminal on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
  3. Power on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System.
  4. If there is a disc in the system, please remove the disc.
  • Performing the upgrade:
  1. At the xross media bar™ menu, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup" - "Network Update" and then press the ENTER button.
  2. The message "Perform version update?" is displayed on the television.
  3. Select "OK" and then press the ENTER button.
  4. The download process starts and the download screen is displayed on the television.
  5. During the download the message "*/9" is displayed on the television.

    Note: The "*" changes to "0" through "9," indicating the download progress.
  6. After the download is complete, the upgrade starts and "UPDATING" appears on the front panel display.
  7. While the upgrade is installed the message "UPDATING" displayed on the front panel display.
  8. The firmware upgrade is complete when "COMPLETE" appears on the front panel display.

    WARNING!! Do not operate or power off the system until this message is displayed. Doing so may cause the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System to be unresponsive or to require repair.

  9. The Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System will automatically power off.
  10. Power on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System.
  11. Check the current firmware version to confirm that the upgrade has successfully installed.

    Note: If the last three digits of the version number are 011 the firmware upgrade was successful.

Possible issues related to the Network Update

"UPDATE" and "INCOMPLETE " are displayed alternately on the front panel display.

  1. Disconnect the AC power cord (mains lead) from the wall outlet (mains), then reconnect after several minutes.
  2. Turn on the power of the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System.
  3. Please execute network upgrade procedure again.
  4. If the symptom does not improve after re-upgrade, please contact Sony.


When running network upgrade, the television shows "Connection status cannot be confirmed" and you cannot upgrade the firmware.

The problem might be at the network connection. Verify that network settings of Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System are appropriate.

  1. Check whether LAN cable is inserted to connector.
  2. Check network setting and confirm whether Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System has own IP address. If you use a proxy server, type IP address of the proxy you use instead of the proxy host name in the "Proxy Server" input field.
  3. Then please execute network upgrade procedure again.


Power was shut down while updating.

Power on the system again. And then please execute network upgrade procedure again.



When the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System is powered on after performing the upgrade, "WELCOME" message appears constantly on the front panel display.

Please contact Sony.



The firmware upgrade (This is not download) does not finish, after running for more than 30 minutes.

  1. Disconnect the AC power cord (mains lead) from the wall outlet (mains), then reconnect after several minutes.
  2. Turn on the power of the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System.
  3. Please execute network upgrade procedure again.
  4. If the symptom does not improve after re-upgrade, please contact Sony.


The system does not output 3D signal after 3D update even if the system is connected to 3D-compatible TV.

Connect the 3D-compatible TV with an HDMI connection.

Perform the following:

  1. Press "HOME".
    The home menu appears on the TV screen.
  2. Press to select "Setup".
  3. Press to select "Screen Settings", then press Enter.
  4. Press to select "Output Video Format", then press Enter.
  5. Press to select "HDMI", then press Enter.
  6. Select "Auto", and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the setup.

Creating an Upgrade disc to be inserted into your Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System

If you successfully upgraded your Blu-ray system using the "Network upgrade" you don't need to apply this procedure.

Applicable models:

  • BDV-E300
  • BDV-E800W
  • BDV-E801
  • BDV-Z7

Warning:

  • This utility is only for use with the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System sold within Europe. Not all models are sold in all countries.
  • Please follow the upgrade instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the upgrade process and may cause the system to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  • Do not power off the system or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware upgrade may cause the system to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  • Your Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System will be reset to the factory default settings. After installing the upgrade you will need to reconfigure your system.
  • Use a brand new recordable CD-R disc to burn the firmware upgrade. The system may not be able to correctly read a dirty disc or a disc with scratches.
  • Recommended operating system for the computer that will download the firmware upgrade:
    • Windows® Vista®, Windows® XP, or Windows® 7 is recommended.
  • You need a computer with a CD writer.

Check the Home Theatre system firmware version:

  • Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the BDV-E300/E800W/E801/Z7 Home Theatre system is connected.
  • Power on the BDV-E300/E800W/E801/Z7 Home Theatre system.
  • If the Home Theatre system starts to play a disc, press the "STOP" button and wait until the blue Sony Blu-ray Disc™ screen is displayed on the television before proceeding.
  • At the "xross media bar™" (XMB™), use the arrow keys on the remote control to highlight "Setup" > "System Settings" and then press the ENTER button.
  • Use the arrow keys on the remote control to highlight "System Information" and then press the ENTER button.
  • The firmware version currently installed on the BDV-E300/E800W/E801/Z7 will be listed like below on the television screen:

    SOFTWARE VERSION XX.X.006

    If the version number is 011 or higher, it is not necessary to install this firmware upgrade.

Download procedure :

  1. Download the UPDATA_13x011.ZIP file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and verify that the size of the UPDATA_13x011.ZIP file is 48,165,706 bytes.
  3. Right-click the UPDATA_13x011.ZIP file, and click "Properties".
  4. On the " UPDATA_13x011.ZIP Properties" screen, verify that the "Size:" listed is "45.9 MB (48,165,706 bytes)".



  5. Extract the UPDATA_13x011.ZIP file to the location of your choice.
  6. The extracted files will be named "BD13-VUD.BIN" and "SONY_VUP.ID"
  7. To create the firmware upgrade disc, write the decompressed files ("BD13-VUD.BIN" and "SONY_VUP.ID") to the root of a CD-R. (avoid using ISO9660 format if using a writing software).

Important notes:

  • When using a DVD/CD burning software please select UDF format.
  • Make sure that the disc is finalized.
  • Make sure the disc creation was correctly done without any error. In case of doubt, recreate a new upgrade disc.
  • Use of the ISO9660 format may result in an incorrect upgrade disc.
  • Do not create the upgrade disc using another process than the one described above.

Firmware upgrade procedure:

  • Warning:

    - Do not turn off the system or disconnect the system from the power supply during the upgrade process. Doing so may damage your system and make it unusable, and would require a repair of the system.

    - Do not press any button, except as instructed, until the upgrade is complete. Doing so may damage your system and make it unusable, and would require a repair of the system.
  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the BD/DVD Home Theatre system is connected.
  2. Power on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system.
  3. Place the upgrade disc in the system, and close the disc tray
  4. After the disc is loaded, the message, Perform version update? is displayed.



  5. Select OK and then press the ENTER button.
  6. Download process starts and "UPDATE" appears on the system front panel display.
  7. When updating:
    UPDATE */9 ("*" changes from "0" to "9," indicating progress) is displayed on the front panel display.



  8. The firmware upgrade is complete when COMPLETE! appears on the Home Theatre system front panel display.
    Do not operate or power off the system until this message is displayed. Doing so may cause the BD/DVD Home Theatre system to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  9. Remove the upgrade disc from the system.
  10. Power on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system.
  11. Check the firmware version:



Possible issues related to the Upgrade disc method

"SYS ERR" or "UPDATE NG" is displayed on the Home Theatre system front panel display.

  1. Disconnect the AC power cord (mains lead) from the wall outlet (mains), then reconnect after several minutes.
  2. Turn on the power of the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System.
  3. Follow the Disc Upgrade Instructions again.
  4. If the problem continues, please contact Sony.


"UPDATE" is not displayed on the front panel display when the upgrade disc is inserted.

Remove the upgrade disc from the system and delete the upgrade files from your computer. Download the upgrade again and follow the entire procedure above to create a new upgrade disc and install the firmware upgrade.



POWER was shut down while updating.

Power on the system again keeping the upgrade disc in the tray. The upgrade should restart automatically.



The UPDATA_13x011.ZIP upgrade file I downloaded from the upgrade web site cannot be extracted.

The download may have failed. Delete the downloaded file and download the upgrade file again.



The firmware upgrade does not finish, after running for more than 30 minutes.

  1. Disconnect the AC power cord (mains lead) from the wall outlet (mains), then reconnect after several minutes.
  2. Turn on the power of the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System.
  3. Execute the Disc upgrade procedure again.
  4. If the symptom does not improve after re-upgrade, please contact Sony.
