Preparation
Check the firmware version
Your firmware may already be up to date. If the version number is M16.R.0257 or higher, you do not need to update.
If you're not sure, it's easy to check which version of firmware you have:
- Turn on your TV and check it's tuned to the input your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 is connected to, so if the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 is connected to the HDMI 2 port, choose HDMI 2 as the input
- Turn on the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100
- Press the "FUNCTION" button repeatedly until "BD/DVD" function appears in the front panel display
- If it starts to play a disc, press STOP and wait until you see the XrossMediaBar (XMB) menu screen
- At the XrossMediaBar, highlight Setup > System Settings then select ENTER using the arrow keys on the remote control
- Highlight System Information on the display and press the ENTER key
- On the TV screen, the firmware version number looks like this:
Software Version M16.R.0257 — if the version number is M16.R.0257 or higher, you already have the most recent firmware version.
Important notice
- Read the instructions carefully or you could end up damaging your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100
- Do not turn the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 off—or disconnect it from the power—while it's updating
- Do not press any buttons, except those mentioned in the instructions
- Do not pull out the power cord or network (LAN) cable during download or update of the software.
- Do not pull out the power cord until update is completed. This will cause a system failure.

Download & Install
Updating your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 via the Internet
We recommend this method as it's the simplest way to update. It usually takes about 15–30 minutes. First set up the equipment, then download the update from the Internet to your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100.
What you need:
- An Ethernet cable to connect your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 to the Internet
- Make sure your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 is connected to:
- an active Internet connection (using Ethernet cable or wireless router)
- a compatible TV
Set up the equipment:
- Turn on your TV and check it's tuned to the input your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 is connected to.(So if the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 is connected to the HDMI 2 port, choose HDMI 2 as the input)
- Connect the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
- Turn on the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 — if there is a disc in the player, take it out.
- Press the "FUNCTION" button repeatedly until "BD/DVD" function appears in the front panel display. - You can only perform the upgrade when the "BD/DVD" function is selected
- At the XrossMediaBar, select [Setup] > [System Settings] using the arrow keys on the remote control and then select ENTER.
- Select "Quick Start Mode" using the remote control — make sure that the "Quick Start Mode" is set to "Off", otherwise, the firmware upgrade may not succeed.
Step 1: Install the update
- At the XrossMediaBar, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select [Setup] > [Network Update] and then press [Enter].
- The message [A new software version has been found on the network. Do you want to update the software?] is displayed on the TV screen. Select [OK] using the remote control, then press [ENTER].
- The message [Update to a new software version. Never turn off power while performing update. Current version M16.R.xxxx New version M16.R.0257 is displayed on the TV screen. Select [Start] using the remote control, and press [ENTER].
- The update starts.
- During the update, you will see the message ["UPDATE"] on the front panel display.
- The firmware upgrade is completed when the message [DONE] displays on the front panel display.
Note: Do not disconnect the power cord during the update process. - Turn the system back on.
Step 2: Confirm that the update was successful
- Check the firmware version. If the version number is M16.R.0257, the firmware update was successful.
Troubleshooting
What to do if you have problems updating your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 firmware via the internet.
- The message [Update failed. ...] is displayed on the TV screen.
- The router and all devices connected between the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 and the router are switched on.
- The correct type of cable (straight or crossover) between the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 and the router is used.
- All the cables between the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 and the router are correctly connected.
- Try the update procedure again
If you cannot perform the Software Update, try the Update via CD-R procedure.
- After the Update via Internet process has started, the message [Download capacity: xxxxxxKB/xxxxxKB and xx% is display in TV screen] is displayed but the progress bar on the display has not changed.
Depending on the network connection, the Update via the Internet process can take a long time (up to 60 minutes). That is why the message [Download capacity: xxxxxxKB/xxxxxKB and xx% is display in TV screen] is displayed and the progress bar on the display will not change for a long time. - When running Update via the Internet, the TV displays the message: [Connection status cannot be confirmed. Cannot communicate with the server. Please try again later.] and you cannot perform the firmware upgrade.
- Check the LAN cable is connected.
- Check you have confirmed whether or not your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 has its own IP address in the network settings.(If you use a proxy server, type the IP address of the proxy you use—instead of the proxy host name—into the Proxy Server field.)
- Try the update again.
- The power went off while the update was in progress.
Turn the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 on and try the update again. - The update has been going for over 60 minutes and has not yet finished.
If the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 is connected wirelessly to the network, please try to connect to the network with a cable and try the procedure again.
If the problem continues, the network transmission speed may be low. In this case, please try to update your system following the Update via CD-R procedure. - The message [This device is not connected to network. Perform network diagnostics in the connection server setting] is displayed on TV screen.
Please check whether the LAN cable is connected to BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100. - The message [Already Updated] is displayed on TV screen.
The firmware version currently installed on the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 is the latest version
Update via CD-R and your PC
We recommend using the Internet to update where possible. If not, you can use this method instead. You can download the update to your computer, transfer it to a CD-R, then transfer it to your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100.
Preparations for Firmware Update
Before downloading the firmware, please ensure that your computer is running one of the following operating systems and prepare CD-R.
Operating systems
- Windows® 10
- Windows® 8.1
- Windows® 7 SP1
Step 1: Install the update
- Read and agree to the terms and conditions.
- Download the file UPDATA_M16R0257.zip to your computer — remembering which directory you download it to.
- Find the file on your computer, right-click on it and click Properties. Check the size is 102 MB (107,018,636 bytes).
Create the disc:
- Extract the update file from the UPDATA_M16R0257.zip file.
- Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and right-click the UPDATA_M16R0257.zip file, then click "Extract All".
Note: For Windows® 8.1 and Windows® 10, the default settings for Internet Explorer® will save the file in the Downloads folder.To locate the Downloads folder, click the "Desktop" tile from the Start screen and then locate the downloaded file using Windows Explorer. - In the "Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders" window, click "Extract".
- A new folder will be created called "UPDATE".
Note: Four files will be extracted: MSB16-FW.BIN and MSB16-FW.ID, MSB16-FW_MB.BIN, and MSB16FW_MB.ID.
- Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and right-click the UPDATA_M16R0257.zip file, then click "Extract All".
- Write these four files to a blank recordable CD. Using CD burning software? Select universal disc UDF format (UDF).
Use of the ISO9660 format may result in an incorrect update disc.
Transfer the update to your player
First get the equipment ready, then transfer the update to your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100.
Get the equipment ready:
- Turn on your TV and check it is tuned to the input your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 is connected to. (So if the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 is connected to the HDMI 2 port, choose HDMI 2 as the input)
- Turn on the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100
- Press the "FUNCTION" button repeatedly until "BD/DVD" function appears in the front panel display.
- If it starts to play a disc, press STOP and wait until you see the XrossMediaBar (XMB) menu screen.
- Select "Quick Start Mode" using the remote control — make sure that the "Quick Start Mode" is set to "Off", otherwise, the firmware upgrade may not succeed.
- Put the disc in the player and close the disc tray.
Transfer the update:
- After the disc loads, you will see the message [Update disc has been inserted. Do you want to update software? Current version M16.R.xxxx New version M16.R.0257 Never turn off power while performing update.] is displayed on the TV
- Select OK using the remote control, then press ENTER
- The update starts
- During the update, you will see the message UPDATE on the front panel display
- The firmware upgrade is completed when the message [DONE] displays on the front panel display.
Note: Do not disconnect the power cord during the update process. - Turn the system back on
Step 2: Confirm that the update was successful
- Check the firmware version. If the version number is M16.R.0257, the firmware update was successful
Troubleshooting
What to do if you have problems updating your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 firmware using your PC and a CD-R.
- "UPDT" and "ERROR" are displayed alternately on the front panel display.
- Turn off the system and disconnect the AC power cord.
- Turn on the power of the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100.
- Take the disc out.
- Try the Update via CD-R procedure.
- The message "UPDATE" is not displayed in the front panel when the update disc is inserted.
Turn on the system again, keeping the upgrade disc in the tray. The upgrade should restart automatically. - The power went off while the update was in progress

Did you download the file successfully? Try to delete the file and download it again. - The update has been going for over 30 minutes and hasn't finished
- Disconnect the AC power cord from the mains, then reconnect it after several minutes
- Turn on the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100
- Try the update procedure again
