Preparation

Check the firmware version

Your firmware may already be up to date. If the version number is M16.R.0215 or higher, you do not need to update.

If you're not sure, it's easy to check which version of firmware you have:

  1. Turn on your TV and check that it's tuned to the input your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 is connected to, so if the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 is connected to the HDMI2 socket, choose HDMI2 as the input
  2. Turn on the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100
  3. Press the 'FUNCTION' button repeatedly until the ' function appears in the front panel display
  4. If it starts to play a disc, press STOP and wait until you see the XrossMediaBar (XMB) menu screen.
  5. In the XrossMediaBar screen, highlight Setup > System Settings then select ENTER using the arrow keys on the remote control
  6. Highlight System Information on the display and press the ENTER key
  7. On the TV screen, the firmware version number looks like this:
    Software Version M16.R.0215—if the version number is M16.R.0215 or higher, you already have the most recent firmware version.

Important notice

  • Read the instructions carefully or you could end up damaging your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100
  • Do not turn the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 off—or disconnect it from the power—while it's updating
  • Do not press any buttons, except the ones mentioned in the instructions
  • Do not pull out a power cord or a network (LAN) cable during the download and update of the software.
  • Do not pull out a power cord until the update has completed. It may cause the system to fail.

Install

Updating your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 over the Internet

We recommend this method as it's the simplest way to update. It usually takes about 15–30 minutes. First set up the equipment, then download the update over the Internet to your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100.

What you need:

  • An Ethernet cable to connect your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 to the Internet
  • To make sure that your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 is connected to:
    • an active Internet connection (using an Ethernet cable or wireless router)
    • a compatible TV

Set up the equipment:

  1. Turn on your TV and check that it's tuned to the input your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 is connected to.(So if the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 is connected to the HDMI 2 port, choose HDMI 2 as the input)
  2. Connect the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
  3. Turn on the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100—If there is a disc in the player, take it out.
  4. Press the FUNCTION button repeatedly until the BD/DVD function appears in the front panel display. - You can only perform the upgrade when the 'BD/DVD' function is selected
  5. In the XrossMediaBar screen, select Setup > System Settings using the arrow keys on the remote control and then select ENTER.
  6. Select Quick Start Mode using the remote control—make sure that the Quick Start Mode is set to Off; otherwise, the firmware upgrade may not succeed.

Step 1: Install the update

  1. In the XrossMediaBar screen, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select Setup > Network Update and then press Enter.
  2. The message A new software version has been found on the network. Do you want to update the software? is displayed on the TV screen. Select OK using the remote control and press ENTER.
  3. The message Update to a new software version. Never turn off power while performing update. Current version M16.R.xxxx New version M16.R.0215 is displayed on the TV screen. Select Start using the remote control and press ENTER.
  4. The update starts.
  5. During the update, you see the message UPDATE on the front panel display.
  6. The firmware upgrade has completed when the message DONE displays on the front panel display.
    Note: Do not disconnect the power cord during the update process.
  7. Turn the system back on.

Step 2: Confirm that the update was successful

  1. Check the firmware version. If the version number is M16.R.0215, the firmware update was successful.

Troubleshooting

What to do if you have problems updating your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 firmware using the Internet.

  • The message Update failed. ... is displayed on the TV screen.
    1. The router and all devices connected between the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 and the router are switched on.
    2. The correct type of cable (straight or crossover) between the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 and the router is used.
    3. All the cables between the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 and the router are correctly connected.
    4. Try the update procedure again

    If you cannot perform the Software Update, try the Update via CD-R procedure.

  • After the Update via Internet process has started, the message Download capacity: xxxxxxKB/xxxxxKB and xx% is display in TV screen is displayed, but the progress bar on the display has not changed.
    Depending on the network connection, the Update via the Internet process can take a long time (up to 60 minutes). That is why the message Download capacity: xxxxxxKB/xxxxxKB and xx% is display in TV screen is displayed and the progress bar on the display does not change for a long time.
  • When running Update via the Internet, the TV displays the message Connection status cannot be confirmed. Cannot communicate with the server. Please try again later. and you cannot perform the firmware upgrade.
    • Check that the LAN cable is connected.
    • Check that you have confirmed whether or not your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 has its own IP address in the network settings.(If you use a proxy server, type the IP address of the proxy you use—instead of the proxy host name—into the Proxy Server field.)
    • Try the update again.
  • The power went off while the update was in progress.
    Turn the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 on and try the update again.
  • The update has been going for over 60 minutes and hasn't finished.
    If the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 is connected via wireless to the network, please try to connect to the network with a cable and try the procedure again.
    If the problem continues, the network transmission speed may be low. In that case, please try to update your system following the Update via CD-R procedure.
  • The message This device is not connected to network. Perform network diagnostics in the connection server setting is displayed on TV screen.
    Please check whether the LAN cable is connected to BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100.
  • The message Already Updated is displayed on TV screen.
    The firmware version currently installed on the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 is the latest version

Update via CD-R and your PC

We recommend that you use the Internet to update if you can. If not, you can use this method instead. You'll download the update to your computer, transfer it to a CD-R, then transfer it to your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100.

Preparations for firmware update

Before downloading the firmware, please ensure that your computer is running one of the following operating systems and prepare your CD-R.

Operating systems

  • Windows® 10
  • Windows® 8.1
  • Windows® 7 SP1

Step 1: Install the update

  1. Read and agree to the terms and conditions.
  2. Download the file UPDATA_M16R0215.zip to your computer, remembering which directory you downloaded it to.
  3. Find the file on your computer, right-click on it and click . Check that the size is 101 MB (106,811,835 bytes).
Create the disc:
  1. Extract the update file from the UPDATA_M16R0215.zip file.
    1. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and right-click the UPDATA_M16R0215.zip file, then click Extract All.
      Note: For Windows® 8.1 and Windows® 10, the default settings for Internet Explorer® will save the file in the Downloads folder.To locate the Downloads folder, click the Desktop tile from the Start screen and then locate the downloaded file using Windows Explorer.
    2. At the Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders window, click Extract.
    3. A new folder will be created called UPDATE.
      Note: Four files will be extracted: MSB16-FW.BIN and MSB16-FW.ID, MSB16-FW_MB.BIN and MSB16FW_MB.ID.
  2. Write these 4 files to a blank recordable CD. Using CD burning software? Select universal disc format (UDF).
    Use of the ISO9660 format may result in an incorrect update disc.
Transfer the update to your player

First get the equipment ready, then transfer the update to your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100.

Get the equipment ready:
  1. Turn on your TV and check that it is tuned to the input your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 is connected to. (So if the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 is connected to the HDMI 2 port, choose HDMI 2 as the input)
  2. Turn on the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100
  3. Press the FUNCTION button repeatedly until the BD/DVD function appears in the front panel display.
  4. If it starts to play a disc, press STOP and wait until you see the XrossMediaBar (XMB) menu screen.
  5. Select Quick Start Mode using the remote control—make sure that the Quick Start Mode is set to Off; otherwise, the firmware upgrade may not succeed.
  6. Put the disc in the player and close the disc tray.
Transfer the update:
  1. After the disc loads, you see the message Update disc has been inserted. Do you want to update software? Current version M16.R.xxxx New version M16.R.0215 Never turn off power while performing update. is displayed on the TV
  2. Select OK using the remote control and then press ENTER
  3. The update starts
  4. During the update, you see the message UPDATE on the front panel display
  5. The firmware upgrade has completed when the message DONE displays on the front panel display.
    Note: Do not disconnect the power cord during the update process.
  6. Turn the system back on

Step 2: Confirm that the update was successful

  1. Check the firmware version. If the version number is M16.R.0215, the firmware update was successful

Troubleshooting

What to do if you have problems updating your BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100 firmware using your PC and a CD-R.

  • UPDT and ERROR are displayed alternately on the front panel display.
    1. Turn off the system and disconnect the AC power cord.
    2. Turn on the power of the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100.
    3. Take the disc out.
    4. Try the Update via CD-R procedure.

  • The message UPDATE is not displayed in the front panel when the update disc is inserted.
    Turn on the system again, keeping the update disc in the tray. The update should restart automatically.

  • The power went off while the update was in progress
    Turn on the system again, keeping the update disc in the tray. The update should restart automatically.

  • The UPDATA_M16R0215.zip update file I downloaded from the update website cannot be extracted.
    Did you download the file successfully? Try to delete the file and download it again.

  • The update has been going for over 30 minutes and hasn't finished
    1. Disconnect the AC power cord from the mains, then reconnect it after several minutes
    2. Turn on the BDV-E2100/E3100/E4100/E6100/EF1100
    3. Try the update procedure again
