Preparation

Your firmware may already be up to date, especially if you have a new AV Receiver.If the version number is M29.R.0475 or higher, you do not need to update.

If you're not sure, it's easy to check which version of firmware you have:

  1. Turn on your TV and check it's tuned to the input your AV Receiver is connected to, so if the AV Receiver is connected to the HDMI2 socket, choose HDMI2 as the input
  2. Turn on the AV Receiver
  3. Press HOME on the remote control and wait until you see the home screen
  4. Press HOME on the remote control, then select [Setup] > [System Settings] > [System Information] using the remote control arrow buttons, and press ENTER
  5. On the TV screen, the firmware version number looks like this:
    "Software Version M29.R.0475" - if the version number is M29.R.0475 or higher, you already have the most recent firmware version.

Updating your STR-DN1060/DN860 over the Internet

We recommend this method as it is the simplest way to update. It usually takes about 15-60 minutes. First set up the equipment, then download the update over the internet to your AV receiver.

What you need:

  • An active internet connection (using Ethernet cable or wireless router)
  • A compatible TV

How to make sure the update goes smoothly

Updating is usually very simple. Here's how you can make sure it goes right first time:

  • Read the instructions carefully or you could end up damaging your AV receiver
  • Don't turn the AV receiver off - or disconnect it from the power - while it's updating
  • Don't press any buttons, except the ones mentioned in the instructions

Set up the equipment:

  1. Turn on your TV and check it's tuned to the input your AV receiver is connected to. (So if the AV Receiver is connected to the HDMI 2 socket, choose HDMI 2 as the input.)
  2. Connect the AV receiver to your internet source using an Ethernet cable or wireless connection via router
  3. Turn on the AV receiver.

Get the update:

  1. At the [Home] menu, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select [Setup] > [System Settings] > [Software Update] > [Update via Internet] and then press Enter
  2. The message [A new software version has been found on the network. Do you want to update the software?] is displayed on the TV screen. Select OK using the remote control, and press ENTER
  3. The message [Update to a new software version. Never turn off power while performing update. Current version M29.R.XXXX New version M29.R.0475] is displayed on the TV screen. Select "Start" using the remote control, and press ENTER
  4. The update starts
  5. The following message will be displayed on the TV screen: [When update starts, "UPDATING" will be displayed on the display window of the receiver. Update takes up to 60 minutes. When update is finished, "COMPLETE" will be displayed on the displays window of the receiver, and the receiver will restart automatically. Do not disconnect the power cord during the update process.]. It takes approximately 5 minutes to start the update, once the software has been downloaded. Select OK using the remote control, and press ENTER
  6. During the update, you see message "UPDATING" on the display window.
  7. The firmware upgrade is completed when the message“COMPLETE”displays on the display window.
    Note: Don't turn the AV Receiver off or disconnect it from the power while it's updating
  8. The AV receiver will automatically restart once the upgrade completes
  9. Check the firmware version. If the version number is M29.R.0475, the firmware update was successful

Troubleshooting

What to do if you have problems updating your AV receiver firmware using the internet.

  • The message [Update failed. Connect the USB memory containing the update files to retry. If the update fails again, please contact the customer service center] is displayed on the TV screen.
    1. The router and all devices connected between the AV receiver and the router are switched on
    2. The correct type of cable (straight or crossover) between the AV receiver and the router is used.
    3. All the cables between the AV receiver and the router are correctly connected.
    4. Try the update procedure again

    If you cannot perform the Software Update, try the Update via USB Memory procedure.

  • After the Update via Internet process has started, the massage [Download capacity: xxxxxxKB/xxxxxKB and xx% is display in TV screen] is displayed but the progress bar on the display has not changed
    Depending on the network connection, the Update via the Internet process can take a long time (up to 60 minutes). That is why the message [Download capacity: xxxxxxKB/xxxxxKB and xx% is display in TV screen] is displayed and the progress bar on the display will not change for a long time.

  • When running Update via the Internet, the TV displays the message, [Connection status cannot be confirmed. Cannot communicate with the server. Please try again later.] and you cannot perform the firmware upgrade.
    • Check the LAN cable is connected.
    • Check you have confirmed whether or not your AV receiver has its own IP address in the network settings (If you use a proxy server, type the IP address of the proxy you use - instead of the proxy host name - into the Proxy Server field)
    • Try the update again.
  • The power went off while the update was in progress.
    Turn the AV receiver on and try the update again
  • The update has been going for over 90 minutes and hasn't finished
    If the AV Receiver is connected via wireless to the network, please try to connect with a cable to the network and try the procedure again.
    If the problem continues, the network transmission speed may be low. In that case please try to update your system following the Update via USB Memory procedure.
  • The message [This device is not connected to network. Perform network diagnostics in the connection server setting] is displayed on TV screen.
    Please check whether the LAN cable is connected to AV receiver.
  • The message [Already Updated] is displayed on TV screen
    The firmware version currently installed on the AV receiver is the latest version

Update via USB Memory Device and your PC

We recommend you use the internet to update if you can. If not, you can use this method instead. You'll download the update to your computer, transfer it to a USB memory device, then transfer it to your AV Receiver.

We recommend the following operating systems:

  • Windows 10 / 8.1 / 7
  • Mac OS X

How to make sure the update goes smoothly

  • Don't turn the AV Receiver off - or disconnect it from the power - while it's updating
  • Don't press any buttons, except the ones mentioned in the instructions

Download the update to your computer:

  1. Read and agree to the terms and conditions
  2. Download the file UPDATE_M29R0475.zip to your computer - remembering which directory you download it to
  3. Find the file on your computer, right-click on it and click Properties. Check the size is 214 MB (224,661,700 bytes)

Save to the USB Memory:

  1. Extract the file to your computer:
    • For Mac OS X: Go to the location where the file was downloaded and double-click the UPDATE_M29R0475.zip file. - The extracted folder is called "UPDATE"
    • For Windows 10 / 8.1 / 7 :
      a. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and right-click the UPDATE_M29R0475.zip file, and then click "Extract All".
      b. At the "Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders" window, click "Extract"
      c. A new folder will be created called "UPDATE".
  2. Make sure that these four files are included inside "UPDATE" folder: MSB29-FW.BIN, MSB29-FW.ID, MSB29-FW_MB.BIN and MSB29-FW_MB.ID
  3. Connect a compatible USB storage device to your computer.
    • For Mac OS X operating system:
      Drag and drop the UPDATE folder to the root folder of the USB device.
    • For Windows operating system:
      1. Go to the directory where the folder was created, and Right-click the UPDATE folder
      2. From the appearing menu, click "Send To..."
      3. Click the drive that represents your USB device (e.g. Removable Disk E:)
      4. The update folder will be copied onto your USB device.

Note: The update will not be performed if the file is not copied to the root directory of the USB device or if the name of the file is modified.

Transfer the update to your AV Receiver

First get the equipment ready, then transfer the update to your AV Receiver.

Get the equipment ready:

  1. Turn on your TV and check it's tuned to the input your AV Receiver is connected to. (So if the AV Receiver is connected to the HDMI 2 socket, choose HDMI 2 as the input.)
  2. Turn on the AV Receiver
  3. Make sure no other USB devices are connected to the AV Receiver, if there are, please unplug it from the AV Receiver

Transfer the update:

  1. Insert the USB storage device containing the update file into USB port located on the front panel of the AV Receiver
  2. At the [Home] menu, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select [Setup] > [System Settings] > [Software Update] > [Update via USB Memory].and then press Enter
  3. The message [“Update files found in the USB memory. Do you want to update software? Current version M29.R.XXXX New version M29.R.0475. Do not turn off the power or remove the USB memory during the update.”] is displayed on the TV screen. Select OK using the remote control, and press ENTER
  4. The following message will be displayed on the TV screen: [When update starts, "UPDATING" will be displayed on the display window of the receiver. Update takes up to 60 minutes. When update is finished, "COMPLETE" will be displayed on the displays window of the receiver, and the receiver will restart automatically. Do not disconnect the power cord during the update process.]. Select OK using the remote control, and press ENTER
  5. The update starts
  6. During the update, you see message "UPDATING" on the display window.
  7. The firmware upgrade is completed when the message“COMPLETE”displays on the display window.
    Note: Don't turn the AV Receiver off or disconnect it from the power while it's updating
  8. The AV Receiver will automatically turn off after the update is complete. Don't use or turn off the AV Receiver until the update is complete.
  9. Take the USB device out of the AV receiver and turn it on
  10. Check the firmware version. If the version number is M29.R.0475, the firmware update was successful

Troubleshooting

What to do if you have problems updating your AV receiver firmware using your PC and a disc.

  • "UPDATE" and "ERROR" are displayed alternately on the display window of the receiver.
    1. Turn off the system and disconnect the AC power cord.
    2. Turn on the power of the AV Receiver.
    3. Try the Update via USB Memory procedure.

  • The power went off while the update was in progress
    Power on the AV Receiver and follow the Update via USB Memory Procedure again.

  • The UPDATE_M29R0475.zip update file I downloaded from the update web site cannot be extracted.
    Did you download the file successfully? Try to delete the file and download it again.

  • The update has been going for over 90 minutes and hasn't finished
    1. Disconnect the AC power cord from the mains, then reconnect it after several minutes
    2. Turn on the AV Receiver
    3. Try the update procedure again.
