α9 Reborn | Firmware V5.0
Following the release of v5.00 firmware – a free of charge download - the award-winning α9 has been reborn with over 20 new features and significant updates to existing features.
The already acclaimed autofocus has been redesigned to offer AI-driven Real-time Tracking AF for quick and precise follow focus with unprecedented accuracy.
Real-time Tracking AF works in conjunction with Real-time Eye AF, also added with the update. The latest iteration of Sony’s best-in-class Eye AF technology, Real-time Eye AF also uses AI-based object recognition, resulting in an unprecedented level of speed and performance for locking on and holding focus on a subject’s eyes. Additionally, with Real-time Eye AF, users can now activate eye detection via a half-press of the shutter release, and can enjoy focus tracking accuracy even if a subject’s eyes are temporarily obscured during shooting.

Videographers will also see an improvement with the newly added Fast Hybrid AF for video, which now provides smoother, more accurate focus during video shooting, even if objects move in front of the subject.
In the Field
Professional sports photographer Mine Kasapoğlu recently tested the v5.0 firmware and was blown away with the improvements to her favourite camera.
Refined Control Features
My Dial allows custom function assignments
Custom function assignments can now be made to the front/rear dials and the control wheel, making frequently used functions available quickly while a custom button is held. The assignments can also be toggled on and off via a custom button.
Easier Custom Button and Function Menu settings
Illustrations showing the selected controls have been added to the custom button setting display, making it easier to see which button is selected for assignment. Function menu settings have been simplified too.
The updated firmware offers notably improved image processing, which maximises the capabilities of the full-frame sensor. The camera now more accurately reproduces subtle changes in light for smoother, more natural tonal gradations and improved auto white balance results.

After being announced as a successor to PlayMemories Mobile back in January, Imaging Edge Mobile has now been released to complement the new firmware, along with the Transfer & Tagging add-on application.
Imaging Edge Mobile offers instant transfer of images from camera to a connected mobile device while shooting. Images can be transferred when utilising the new ‘Auto background transfer to Smartphone’ functionality, allowing users to easily share content direct from their phone to social media platforms. The mobile application also supports 4K movie transfer and offers remote control functionality.
The Transfer & Tagging add-on provides an instant delivery workflow by allowing users to transfer content to their mobile devices via the camera’s FTP background transfer, without having to switch their focus from shooting. It also enables voice input for text and captioning to help streamline communication and overall workflow between photographers and other team members. There is also an online function that will allow you to sync Caption Glossary between multiple devices.
Improved Usability and Workflow
With Firmware version 5.0, the a9 also adds several customer-requested features:
Improved touchpad capability
Enhanced dual-card functionality
JPEG Quality in RAW + JPEG can be set
Monitor OFF function is selectable directly from the display button
Group display of continuous shots
Contrast AF points have been increased from 25 to 425
Continuous focus works with aperture up to f/16 and highly improved at f/11
