The image sensor is the heart of your digital video camera, the chip that converts light into electronic data.

CCD sensors were the standard until recently, when CMOS started becoming the technology of choice for higher-quality cameras.

Now the era of High Definition video has well and truly arrived, Sony has taken sensor evolution to a stage further with the ClearVid CMOS Sensor featuring Exmor technology.

The ClearVid CMOS Sensor has a higher resolution and better sensitivity, with a wider dynamic range.

The new Exmor processing technology adds a column A/D converter to the sensor, realising ultra high resolution with greater sensitivity and lower noise.

Another advantage of the ClearVid CMOS Sensor is that it runs cooler and needs less power, so we can fit more electronics on fewer chips, in smaller and more battery efficient cameras.

The magic of CMOS

The ClearVid CMOS Sensor reduces the picture noise (or fuzziness) that can ruin your footage when you shoot in low light.

Driven by the extra power of the new Bionz image processor, this Sony unique sensor uses larger pixels to capture more light and a higher density of green pixels to increase resolution.

Improved light sensitivity and resolution, including the unique structure of the CMOS Sensor to reduce smear and widen dynamic range, give you brighter, crisper images.

Faster processor, more features

The CMOS Sensor and Bionz image processor meet the demands of High Definition without using too much power, which means longer battery life, more compact design and greater portability.

And that’s not all. Greater efficiency powers additional features like Smooth Slow and Dual Recording.

Smooth Slow Recording captures three seconds of footage as a 12 second slow motion clip, whereas Dual Recording enables simultaneous capture of moving footage and up to 5 megapixel still photos, or up to 10 megapixel still images when captured separately.
