Designed in Japan

Made in Japan

Blueprint for Quality

The essence of every VAIO is crafted at Nagano Tec in central Japan. It is here that designers and electrical engineers work together at every stage of development to create and test new products. This Upstream Design process along with intense quality control makes VAIO unique and unparalleled.

Even VAIO products made out of Japan are assembled to the same exacting standards. VAIO teams supervise production through to completion of a project, constantly checking quality and helping with enhancements. All to ensure the best possible VAIO performance for customers.

The VAIO way

The VAIO way is to constantly simulate and check to ensure the best possible quality. From the first CAD designs through engineering and design verification to component treatment, engineers and designers analyse performance and fine tune until perfection is achieved. Here’s how it works:

Theoretical Engineering

Theoretical Engineering

Designers lay out ideas using CAD for discussion within the Upstream Design process.

Engineering Verification Testing

Engineering Verification Testing

Engineers analyse factors such as heat dissipation using varying sizes of fans and the suitability of the motherboard.

Design Verification Testing

Design Verification Testing

Engineers look at how the design performs in areas such as wireless coverage and battery life.

Component Treatment

Component Treatment

Special processes are carried out such as laser printing of keyboards on VAIO professional notebooks for extra durability.

Tested to destruction

Then comes probably the most severe QA testing of PC products anywhere in the world. Rather than just run through basic tests to meet minimum standards, VAIO tackles over 40 gruelling tests in real-life situations. Our seven top tests are:

Designed to work in the Sahara or the Arctic
Designed for dusty rooms and windy parks
Designed to be turned on and off throughout the day

Designed to work in the Sahara or the Arctic

Thermal Tests - VAIO notebooks are run continuously in controlled chambers with temperatures ranging from well below zero right up to 60ºC

Designed for dusty rooms and windy parks

Dust Tests - VAIO notebooks are run for extended periods inside dusty sealed chambers to ensure they work well in real-life situations

Designed to be turned on and off throughout the day

Stress Tests - VAIO notebooks are tested to handle the everyday stress and strain of repeated use

Designed for use in bumpy cars and trains
Designed to fall off high desks without damage
Designed to keep you online wherever you go

Designed for use in bumpy cars and trains

Pressure Tests - VAIO notebooks endure shock and vibration tests for up to a week to make sure they withstand the rigours of modern transport

Designed to fall off high desks without damage

Drop Tests - VAIO notebooks are dropped from table height facing bottom down to check the chassis is strong enough to protect components

Designed to keep you online wherever you go

Wireless Tests - VAIO notebooks undergo intense testing of Bluetooth, Wireless LAN, Wireless WAN and WiMax

Designed to work safely
