Handycam® technologies explained

Don't know your Optical SteadyShot Active Mode from your Exmor R™ CMOS Sensor? Here's our friendly guide to some of the smart technologies inside a Handycam®. Brilliantly easy to use, they’re designed to help you take better-looking video and still pictures every time.

Please note: availability of individual technologies varies by Handycam® model.

Handycam® latest developments

Shoot in low light with Exmor R™ CMOS Sensor

The advanced Exmor R™ CMOS Sensor increases sensitivity by approximately 2x compared with conventional CMOS models. This innovative sensor is now available on even more Handycam® camcorders, including advanced Standard Definition models, and ensures brilliant picture quality even when you’re shooting in low light such as interiors, dusk or twilight.

Capture approx. 2x larger shooting area with wide angle filming

Find out how to capture more in your movies with wide angle technology from Sony. The latest Handycam® camcorders have a wide angle lens integrated into a compact camcorder body so you can easily capture beautiful wide angle shots. Or you can add an optional wide angle lens for an impressive wide view and be sure to get the whole party in the scene.

Walk, zoom & film with Optical SteadyShot Active Mode

Wobbly images caused by unsteady hands are one of the most common causes of disappointing results, especially when filming hand-held while on the move. Now with Optical SteadyShot Active Mode you can get jittery results and dramatically reduce camera shake, by up to 10 times with wide end and up to 3 times with tele end (zoom settings), compared to previous Handycam® models with standard Optical SteadyShot.

Easily get great results with iAUTO mode

Unlike simple auto mode, iAUTO mode does the thinking for you. It recognises your surroundings and automatically adjusts settings for the best filming results. iAUTO selects from 90 possible settings then uses clever technologies to optimise for faces, smiles, low-light levels, different scenes (beach, snow, sports, etc.) or anti-shake adjustment.

Enhance filming quality with 24Mbps recording

Film with one of the 2010 Handycam® camcorders with 24Mbps recording (the highest bit rate setting in the AVCHD format), and you’ll notice the benefits in your movie results. Capture more detail, better colour gradation and improved fast-moving action scenes compared to previous models.

Analyse your sports form with Golf Shot

Thanks to clever, new Handycam® technology, it’s now possible to film your golf swing or football kicking technique. Golf Shot mode breaks down and captures your swing or kick, frame by frame. Then it produces slow motion video and a picture of each movement, so you can analyse every vital part of your swing or kick and work out how it can be improved.

Save memories the simple way with Direct Copy

With Handycam® it’s now possible to copy images and films in your camcorder directly to an external Hard Disk Drive (HDD) using an optional USB adaptorcable, without fussing with a PC. If you want to watch the archived footage, connect the HDD to a Handycam® and then to a TV. You can browse videos and photos by date or map and easily play them back directly on the TV screen.

Shoot at night with an integrated video light

Standard Definition (SD) Handycam® camcorders without an Exmor R™ CMOS Sensor now come with an integrated video light. It’s the easy way to improve filming at night or in low light. Simply turn on the video light and illuminate subjects so your Handycam® can capture facial expressions, natural colours and more detail in dark shadows.

Retrace your memories with GPS geotagging

Thanks to the built-in GPS receiver in Handycam® camcorders, your video clips and photos are automatically ‘geotagged’ with their exact location. After shooting, view them as ‘map pins’ on the Map Index on your GPS camcorder’s LCD screen (NB: map coverage may not cover all world regions) or enjoy Google online map views on your PC using the supplied PMB (Picture Motion Browser) software. Don’t forget, if you don’t have a GPS camcorder, you can easily add it as an optional accessory.
