How we make a VAIO

 

From sourcing materials to shipping the finished product, we’re working towards a future in which making a VAIO sets the standard for all other notebook computer manufacturers.

We continually work to reduce the size of VAIO packaging

Reduced packaging

As VAIO products become smaller, we continually reduce the size of our packaging. There are other, smarter ways we make an impact too. For example, the VAIO W Series eco edition was delivered in a reusable carry bag. This ingenious solution meant that you didn’t have to throw away any packaging – and we could fit almost 20% more notebooks on the same sized shipping pallet.

VAIO laptops are made using sustainable processes

Reduced carbon emissions

All of our manufacturing sites play an important part in our efforts to reach the tough globally set targets to reduce waste, energy and overall carbon emissions as outlined in the “Road to Zero” global environmental plan. What’s more, every site in Europe with more than 100 employees adheres to Sony’s Global Environmental Management System (GEMS) and is powered by 100% renewable energy.

Less packaging means more energy efficient shipping

Efficient shipping and distribution

With less packaging we can load more products in each truck, and with improvement in distribution management we load bigger trucks for less frequent trips.

We check eco-credentials of all suppliers

Certified green suppliers

Before we start production, we make sure our suppliers share our environmental outlook. In fact, you can’t be a Sony supplier until you’ve passed an audit and have been fully certified as a Green Partner.

VAIO S Series laptops use recycled materials

Made from recycled materials

Creating products from recycled materials uses fewer natural resources and makes less impact on the environment. For example, nearly 85% of all plastic parts in the 2010 models of the VAIO S Series are made with recycled materials, including polycarbonates recovered from CD or DVD manufacturing.
