Thinking about the future

What will life be like in 2025? It’s impossible to say for sure. Whatever happens, one thing is clear: the world in 2025 will be very different from the one we live in today.

FutureScapes is a creative collaboration of artists, designers, futurologists, engineers, scientists, writers and people like you. Together, we’ll see how technology and entertainment can create a better, more sustainable future for everyone.

FutureScapes isn’t about making predictions. It’s about harnessing the collective imagination to think beyond our current lifestyles and technologies and invent radical new and exciting ones.

Why we began FutureScapes

At Sony we believe that technology can make a positive contribution to the social and environmental challenges we face. But, just as it’s difficult to imagine what the future might look like, it’s difficult to imagine what technologies we might need.

That’s why, as experts in technology, imagination and innovation, we teamed up with Forum for the Future, a leading sustainability NGO, to launch FutureScapes in September 2011. We want everyone to get involved, so the project will be as open and collaborative as possible.

Looking ahead with FutureScapes

FutureScapes consists of an exciting and eclectic programme of activity, using films, vlogs, fiction and research to inspire people to think more deeply about life in 2025.

To stimulate a pan-European conversation, we’re crowd sourcing ideas with Wired magazine, developing thought pieces with The Economist Intelligence Unit and producing short films based on different scenarios for 2025.

All feedback will shape the brief for two concept innovation workshops with world-leading experts from Sony and beyond in early 2012. The public will get the chance to vote for the best concepts and follow the process as Sony R+D experts and partners start to bring them to life.

We’ll then share the final FutureScapes concepts, and reflect on how future thinking makes a difference to us here and now.
