Helping the planet

We believe that technology can play a key role in solving some of the environmental issues facing the planet, and we have set ourselves strict sustainability targets that include lowering energy consumption, reusing materials and recycling more. We also look beyond our products to support eco initiatives that could benefit from using our technologies and products for environmental gain.

Supporting young eco minds

Sony is proud to support Forest Guard – a powerful idea by six children in California to help prevent devastating forest fires in their area. The idea was the winning entry in the Children’s Climate Call competition, and Sony engineers are developing the technology that will turn the idea into reality.

WWF Climate Savers

In July 2006 Sony made a commitment to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) that said by 2010 we would cut our greenhouse gas emissions by 7% from their year 2000 levels, and reduce CO2 emissions from product use. It was a huge commitment that meant looking closely at every part of our business.

EU REACH Regulation

Sony continually works to restrict the use of harmful substances in both the components we buy and the products we manufacture.

We have led the industry by establishing our own global standards for the management of chemical substances. A key tool we have established is the Green Partner Environmental Quality Approval Program for Sony suppliers. This ensures we maintain a common global quality standard by buying electronic parts only from suppliers who have passed an audit and have been certified as Green Partners.

In addition to our work to restrict the use of harmful substances, The European Union Regulation No 1907/2006 on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) requires that any companies operating in the EU, including Sony, comply with various legal obligations, including informing customers about the use of ‘Substances of Very High Concern’ (SVHC), that are listed on the so-called ‘REACH Candidate List’, in our products.
