Andrew Scriven – exploring new frontiers

Andrew Scriven is a photographer with a passion for travel and beautiful landscapes. Now he's exploring the use of 3D sound and cinematography.

My inspiration

I have a particular passion for landscape photography. From Himalayan mountains and South American rainforests to the streets of Jerusalem or the World Cup in South Africa, the search for jaw dropping vistas and cultures continues to fuel my love of independent travel. Everywhere I go, I take my camera and lenses.

My photo of a 3-mast tea clipper in Antarctica waters at twilight was a finalist in The Sony World Photography Awards. The magical scene was shot from the top of a glacier. The tea clipper in the foreground looks like a toy ship next to the glaciers, allowing the observer to appreciate the wondrous scale of the landscape.

3D sound and cinematography

I’m always asked about the atmosphere and the noises at some of the weird and wonderful places I visit, so I began to explore marrying 3D sound with beautiful photography. My aim is to bring scenes to life and really create an immersive atmosphere for the viewer.

My latest project is to create the feel, emotions and atmosphere of a gig using binaural sound. Binaural sound is a 3D sound effect using the recording from two microphones which mimics how we hear as humans. It gives you the sensation as though you’re actually at the venue with the crowds and musicians.

How to match images and sound

I worked with 3D sound designers to bring the whole experience to life: the noise outside the venue, the anticipation of the crowd, the energy of the arena as the musicians are about to go on stage. The cinematography and sound has to work together perfectly to make the viewer feel as though they’re actually there.

The great thing is anyone can have a go at adding sound to their photography thanks to the image and audio capabilities of today’s digital cameras. Next time you stop to capture a beautiful landscape, a bustling scene from a foreign holiday or even a happy family occasion, think about the sound too. From there, look through your photos to find the most impactful ones and think about how you might match those with your most evocative sounds.
