How did an inquisitive toddler lead an engineer to create one touch re-calibration of surround sound speakers?

Inspiration

A Sony sound engineer had an inquisitive toddler who couldn’t resist climbing all over the furniture and the speakers...

Every time he came home, the speakers had been moved and they sounded different. So the engineer thought, ‘What if there was a single button I could press to get the best sound for my room, really quickly?’

Creation

Being able to re-calibrate speakers easily is essential if they’re moved – whether it’s a few centimetres or a total change around. And speedily too: Competitor models can take up to half an hour to configure.

First, our sound engineers had to understand the sound properties of the living room.

They then meticulously measured the audio frequencies across all 11 octave ranges, in order to replicate the ideal sound set up.

From these calculations, Digital Cinema Auto Calibration was born: An advanced technology that picks the best sound profile to fit the shape and acoustic character of any room, in less than 30 seconds.

Demonstration

By placing a special microphone device where you sit, DCAC measures the speaker outputs and sound delay against our ‘perfect living room’ settings.

It takes between just 10 and 30 seconds to re-calibrate your speakers, to an accuracy of 1 to 2cm across all Home Theatre set ups. Significantly faster, more accurate and thorough, DCAC optimises speakers in line with the whole width of a sofa – not just a single sweet spot.

Injected into our Home Theatre systems, you’ll find DCAC in a wide range Home Cinema systems and receivers.
