Sony's environmental initiatives are among our most important.

We live in an age where customers consider environmental factors in their purchase decisions, and Sony's environmental initiatives remain one of our most important tasks. "More with Less" is a phrase that captures Sony's commitment to the environment, delivering products that offer "More" value and entertainment with "Less" environmental impact.

Sony is committed not only to offering products, services and content that deliver exciting user experiences by inspiring and fulfilling the curiosity of our customers around the world, but also, through our "Road to Zero" environmental plan, to working towards our goal of a zero environmental footprint throughout our business activities.

Our Vision

Sony is taking on the ambitious goal of zero environmental impact through our Road to Zero environmental plan. To reduce our environmental footprint to zero, we’re working toward targets set from the four guiding perspectives of curbing climate change, conserving resources, controlling chemical substances, and promoting biodiversity. Responsibility across product life cycles is expressed through targets set for each stage from product planning to final take back or recycling. These concerted efforts help reduce our environmental impact.

Improving Energy Efficiency

One way Sony responds to climate change is through energy-efficient products with lower CO2 emissions. Sony technologies trim energy consumption, both in normal operation and in standby mode. Advanced designs help achieve greater energy efficiency and minimize power losses. Magnetic fluid technologies incorporated in audio speakers is another example of energy efficient technologies.Sony has pioneered this technology in mass-produced full-range speakers, where it also enhances audio performance.

Saving Resources

Expanded use of recycled plastic is another promising Sony approach. Lighter, more compact products require fewer resources. The α7 series demonstrates this well, with smaller, lighter full-frame mirrorless cameras made with more recycled plastic. SORPLAS™, short for Sustainable-Oriented Recycled Plastic, now has a recycled content of up to 99%. This Sony-developed plastic is used in many product categories and sold to other manufacturers as a promising approach toward societies with a lighter environmental footprint.

Management of Chemical Substances

Sony’s own standards for chemical substance management, which are even stricter than global mandates, help maintain rigid control over chemicals in products. One facet is our Green Partner Environmental Quality Approval Program. Introduced in 2002, the program restricts internal purchases of raw materials and parts to green partner suppliers, who keep their certification status up to date. Chemicals that are not regulated but still pose some environmental or health concerns are phased out or replaced.

Biodiversity Conservation

Among other efforts, Sony protects biodiversity through greening and conservation initiated by our own offices or our communities. A good example in Japan is the ongoing groundwater recharge program that replenishes the groundwater used in semiconductor production. Around the world, Sony group companies take on locally attuned conservation, whether by supporting wildlife habitats in New York, planting mangroves in Thailand, or participating in other programs.
