I agree with Ray here.

I decided to go with a MacBook after the issues I had with my Vaio and it's been perfect. Ive have no issues and transition to Mac has been exteremely easier than I thought it would be

I highly doubt Sony have made design changes for reasons you've said.

No, the guide they gave me were changes I needed to make in the system preferences but what you are taking about is in the manual.

I did honestly get fed up with that machine as it just became unbearable at times to use without noticing the fans.

But as you said, if they claimed to have fixed it, I may get one as that was my only big concern with the machine. Apart from that, it was great.

In all honesty, if you made a case with Sony directly and thats if you find it's making too much noise, you could probably get them to return the item for you as I doubt they will be completely unreasonable and bet you'll find something else on your Vaio which won't be 100% exactly as it should. Don't think you will need the courts as thal is alway a measure of last resort.

I have got a copy of this guide from Sony. I can forward it to you if you wish but I wouldn't bother found it did nothing and it affects performance.

Call Vaio-Link / Sony's customer service. They should be able to provide it to you with your Vaio's serial number.

I've had 2 of these Vaios and they make loads of noise. It's normal for these Vaios so don't freak out if you hear it. Keep away if your the sort of person who hate fan noise and how warm the chasis becomes.

However, I did have the SB series for a while and I found it wasn't as loud but still as warm. But not sure if this is true for everyone else.

I've also read in many reviews that Sony's Z series is the same so it seems a lot of their notebooks currently do this normally.

No, Sony did nothing positive.

They kept claiming its normal due to the high powered processors in their laptops which does make sense but is stupid that they expect customers to be happy with it. I would have thought they could found at better method to cool the laptop down and ventilate heat produced. I

You are right about the customization, you can't return so if the fan noise is going to bother you, keep well away. I managed to get a refund on my customised Vaio eventually but it wasn't easy.

But you said you want to add Ram, and in Sony's terms, you can add RAM later to a vaio without voiding the warranty.

So you could buy the stock Vaio and add ram later after testing it an seeing how you feel.

The recommend battery life provided by Sony is rubbish.

I found I had to do things like turn bluetooth off, lower the brightness, use power saver mode and etc. to get anywhere near 7/7.5 hours they suggest. I wouldn't worry about the battery life.

If you need recovery discs, usually Sony will charge you for them as they expect you to use the recovery partition or you make your own discs.

Vaio S model overheating/fan noise - will a SSD drive descrease the heat/fan noise?

From what i gathered when I had my SA Series Vaio, people with SSD's also had the issue. The HD make little noise themselves so you wouldn't notice any difference apart from speeds obviously

The heat issue is more down to the processor than anything else and Sony claim the heat produced is whats expected

I would advise that you will experience lots of fan noise with the SA regardless of what your doing as when I had my Vaio, when it was idle and sitting on my desk doing nothing, its fans would be on continually.

Sony provided me a guide on how to reduce the fan noise but it did nothing to help the issue and just affected performance.

Strangely, when I had a SB vaio, its fans weren't as loud and I've not read any users complain of the SB so maybe you should consider that instead if you can compromise on the screen

If you are easily annoyed with something like fan noise and it getting very hot, just keep well away from this Vaio as they is nothing that you can really do.

If I was you, don't waste your time with this machine unless your willing the withstand the constant noise of the fans when you start doing basic things like browsing the Internet.

After speaking to people internally from Sony, they don't think this is an issue as they expect it for such high powered machines. They believe I am just creating a problem.

The recommended settings are useless in my opinion but strangely, they haven't released yet for everyone to give their comments. The settings from my experience, impact performance yet the machine is nearly as loud as before.

I don't think now, the laptop overheats as all of us mention and I think Sony has meant it to get as warm as it does which I feel is stupid and obvious a design flaw which they are too embarassed to admit.

I had the SB before this SA (this was before they introduced the SA)and every part if the spec is the same but the screen resolution. I found it was a lot quieter except for when doing some demanding task so in my opinion, the screen is doing something or it's specific to the SA series Vaios.

Apparently, the Vaio Z series is worse than the S series and fan noise is actually mentioned in nearly all review and usually reviewers don't tend to pick up on things like this which is concerning.

I was going to to get this Vaio instead but I don't want a repeat of S series.

I am now returning my SA as I can't stand it any longer.

My Vaio is a custom spec. model/CTO but I got mine from the Sony Online store. They don't take returns on CTO Vaios but I pretty much gave them no option as I was fed up with them telling me how to use my Vaio and there are advertised images contracting what they were saying.

Sadly Sony Stores are third party/separate from Sony and they're basically resellers. If you can't get them to return it, try seeing if Sony would reimburse for this laptop by speaking to their escalations dept.

That is how my refund was authorised after several weeks.

Just thought I'll let you guys know that Sony are releasing a short guide with suggested setting changes to change/lower the fan noise of the SA/SB series.

I got a chance to test it today, and in my opinion, I see no real change at all and I think it actually affects performance even though they claim it doesn't.

Apparently it will be available on this forum somwhere in the next few days so I hope some others can give updates and feedback on whether you've noticed any changes in fan noise or if you've noticed any drops in performance.

I talked to Vaio-link earlier and from what i gather, this is apparently normal behavior for this laptop which is not what I wanted to hear.

I hope Sony can sort this out as I am considering getting rid of it as it is becoming unbearable.

Has anyone else also noticed that the loose screen/hinge? I find when you pick up the laptop, the screen falls down about 20 degrees

I don't think you can unless there is some sort of third party software which recognises that hardware and can do what you asking.

I know with some external mobile dongles, you can actually recieve and send texts but I've never seen any able to make calls.

Your best bet is to take out a separate data plan for your laptop if you want to have to keep taking out the sim card, this is what I've done and it ony costs me £5 a month. Otherwise, thether your phone, as you suggested.

What you've explained is exactly the same for me. I also find the switching between graphics cards strange as it flickers several time between different modes before settling. I definitely think it is a design flaw and I won't be surprised to see a recall soon. I hope people actually call Vaio Support about this so it is brought to their attention and they have a chance to fix the issue because apart from this one fault I can't find much to complain about.

You can, but all you may require to do first is change an option in Windows so then you close the lid, the computor deos nothing and remains on.

You could just purchase the item and return if it doesn't work as I believe you can do if purchased from Sony Online.

New Z series with sata HDs instead of SSDs?

Does anyone else want to see the new Z series with sata Hard Drives instead of the SSDs they have?

I undertand this is one of Sony's flagship Vaios but I don't want to pay a few hundred pounds for the sake of a faster hard drive and a little performance.

Does anyone else believe Sony should give us the option on the type of HD we want?

I just got a CTO SA series Vaio and I find it is heating up very quickly and I worry it may be over heating. I also find the fans seem to be extremely loud which I presume is due to it being very hot. I did temporarily have a SB Vaio with very similar specification and never had this issues so would it only be specific for the SA? Has anyone else with a SA Vaio noticed this or is it a known issues? And does anyone know how I can fix it?

Also, is anyone experiencing anywhere near the 7 hour battery (or 14 with the sheet battery)?

Because I am getting nowhere near it. Think i'm gonna try escalate this because this is not functioning as it shoud in my opionion.

Well I've been regularly using it with an external display also but that doesn't stop it heating up for me.

I read that message in the manual and think its bit of a joke to think customer won't do that

I reported this issue to a person inside Sony and he said positing it on here would raise it to Sony's attention as there are people appartently from Sony to take feedback from these forums.

I wish I could get a refund as Ray1090 suggested but Sony don't take returns on customised laptops unless their faulty and Sony see this are normal from what I gather.

Someone earlier mentioned it was maybe due to the i7 but i had previously an SB i7 Vaio and it wasn't as bad as this.

I wouldn't be suprised if there is a recall for this laptop some time soon though as I can't believe it is normal for a laptop to be doing this. The Apple Macbook Airs don't produce this much heat and they are smaller.
