I think in many ways you are correct, although I'm sure there are many like myself who still monitor this forum for messages of interest. Sony themselves have rarely participated and you will see most questions, queries, information has been from 'ordinary' users much like most user community forums.

The problem has obviously risen from the general lack of uptake of product and apathy from Sony. I am actually a 'happy' tablet user - but that needs to be put in context, I have no problems with what my tablet does in fact I still like it.

I have an issue with the lack of development, product support and updates.

I would guess for those of us who are happy there is little new to talk about - and for those like yourself who are obviously less happy there is only your unhappiness and no-one to respond, hence the forum going quiet.

I will continue to check in periodically incase there is someone I can help or something of interest but alas I think the forum will gradually subside more and more...

Whilst I still love my tablet S - it will probably be the last sony tech I buy, and I've been accused of being a fanboy, had a walkman, minidisc, all PS versions, PSP, Sony Alpha DSLR's and lenses, but I should have learnt my lesson with the Sony Satio Phone - great tech, best camera phone out there but discarded rapidly!!!

The same seems to have happened to the Tablet S - such an innovative design and good but lack of support and development is shocking.....my Satio was replaced with and iPhone, looks like my tablet will be replaced eventually with an iPad!

There is a newer iPlayer app on the play store, when you try and use this it will then point you to the new media player app - after that it all worked ok - catchup tv also works if you register for that.

Still love my tablet S but it will probably be the last Sony Tech purchase. No ongoing support and dumping the product so quickly.......should have learnt my lesson with the Satio phone

Hi Gordonda,

I was an early adopter - bought on day2 of UK release. I wanted something other than an ipad as I have an iphone. I have posted on the forum quite alot and tried to help where I can - I am a 'techie' and work in the IT industry but am not a programmer or software guru - The Tablet S was my first tablet and my first android experience - my wife has an iPad.

I think the background is to show I'm trying to give an unbiased view and some basis to how I draw the conclusions I do so enough of that!

I have to say I love my tablet, I've no issues with it's use and it does what it does well. I've had no issues with the updates we've had and the performance has been good. The universal remote is fantastic, use for music playback (via my soundsticks is great) I needed android apps to easily access my NAS and the music on it but it works well.

Movies I've purchased or transfered have excellent playback. The screen is responsive but no great stylus is available. There isn't the same amount of apps via Android as there is with Apple but there are some cross overs - and the occassional gem only on adroid - it's catching up but slowly.

Now to Sony - support for the tablet s - in fact tablets in general. Firstly I have been a sony user for a long time, psp, ps2, minidisk, ps3, sony phones, sony dslr etc. That established the support has been very poor this and other forums have been the greatest help - with plenty of helpful people. Sony have been deadly quiet the lack of quick updates on what should be an open format like Android. We have only just received in the UK the update the US got that made available some of the features the new Xperia Tablet got - there is no sign of Jelly Bean and it's doubtful it will happen (although we live in hope!) for original Tablet S owners - God knows how those poor Tablet P users feel!

The long and short of this is that whilst I love my Tablet S - Sony seem to have already discareded it to many extents already - I don't believe they will actively stay in the market or are serious about it or supporting it. I can not hand on heart recommend it to anyone today, it had great potential but that seems to have been squandered. Much as I hate to say this - if you need a tablet get an iPad - or if you want Android one of the cheaper tablets that are now available and actually give regular updates and support all the releases of Android upon release or soon after.

Hi,

You don't say which Tablet you have but assuming they are the same - I have the original Tablet S and assuming the stock browser then you touch the tab at the top, then the spanner on the right for settings, select privacy and can clear from there. Alternatively select the history option in settings and touch and hold for individual deletions.

not sure this is going to help but I upgraded as soon as I got the notification and can happily report no issues. I've tested the points listed as not working and they all work fine.

With one really useful addition in that the Walkman app discovers all the media on my NAS.

As you will know I was an early adopter with a day two puchase of the tablet in the UK, and have been a relatively staunch defender of it. However now I am getting massively disappointed by Sony's attitude to us Tablet S owners (god only knows how those who bought a 'P' must feel).

I work in the IT industry for a massive corporate and if we brought out a product and ceased updates within 18 mths we would get crucified, lose all credibility and massive market share. I still love my tablet and appreciate technology moves on but you would expect at least three year support and developement for a product with software updates. One of the reasons for choosing the tablet was because Android is more open standard so upgrades should get done. At the very least if Sony's attitude is to cease support they shoul release an unlock and make it simple for us to upgrade independantly to Jelly Bean.

Even Apple allow older devices to use the latest updates even if the hardware doesn't support all the new features - my iPhone 4 is happily running ios 6.0.1 even though most features are for the iPhone 5.

It seems I may have to go to an iPad when I decide to renew my tablet.....unless sont recognise the error of their ways - something I unfortunately doubt due to their silence and the dwindling activity on this forum - it seems the tablet s will go the way of the mini disk player - you think I would learn!

As Rich has suggested a search of google play will bring you 5 apps that say they'll play mts just search for 'mts player' or 'mts video player'

I can't recommend one as I don't have any mts format video.

I have the original Tablet S and have had since the day after release there are quite a few old threads about wifi. The following is from a post I made a long time ago and touch wood have never had the issue since:

I had experienced this a long time ago - I downloaded advanced wifi lock - there is a free and paid version the paid just gives a widget and a few extra settings.

I just have to have turned it on and off at some point using this and no reconnect issues.

My main reason for getting this app though was when I'm streaming music the screnn can go off but it stay connected regardless.

Welcome to the forum.

I personally have had no issues got my tablet the day after release - real bleeding edge and have no regrets. It's not an ipad but I didn't want one of those.

I bought because I wanted something different based on Android, the universal remote, the expandable memory via sd card etc.

Welcome to the forum - there is definitely a wealth of knowledge here and people who are more than willing to help as you will have seen.

My pointers to you for ease of adaptation to your tablet is to think of it more like a smartphone than a pc. That's not to say it can't do pc like tasks but you generally need 'an app' to do it.

If you have specific functionality you are looking for then try and be specific and you'll most likely get an answer here.

You'll have already seen with FileManagerHD that alot of use that app for 'file browsing' although the naming structure used isn't that obvious - for example your external sd card is actually the sdcard2 directory!

There are other apps for media viewing fornats that aren't supported by the native viewer I use MX player personally but you will see others listed as well.

So enjoy your tablet - let us know if you have more questions and if we can help.

To cradle or not to cradle?

Without knowing what yours does it's hard to say!

I have the cradle and use it nightly to charge, and use as an alarm, it easily slips on and off without fiddling with the charger socket - it also starts the cassandra app that I use as an alarm, news headlines and weather.

Now all these things could be done manually - and yours may, if not that's basically the main features!

Hi red,

I'm afraid I can't speak for sony or comment on irish support - but I woud venture that there isn't a massive amount in the sony store, for the e-reader there are plenty of other apps and formats etc where you can get books and readers.

The tablet has been great and I generally use it daily for various different use cases it's still a great tablet, and I prefer it to my wifes ipad but they both have things the other can't do - I wanted something that wasn't a big version of my iphone, that was different but on an open format (Android) - in that case the sony s met my needs and still does. I don't care that some of the proprietry stuff didn't work as I wanted from the start there were apps available that did and now Sony have updated.

I'd suggest that you list the things you want from a tablet and see what the tablet s meets natively, what can be met by apps and what can't be done - if your third list is the largest then it seems the tablet s isn't for you - if either of the other two lists win out then hopefully you'll see the tablet as more than useful.

If there is stuff you find you can't do try asking here - people are quite knowledgeable and helpful and may have a workaround for you.

I would have to agree with sehuxle - ICS has been better for me and I've not seen any of the issues that have been mentioned here or on other forums. The browser is more responsive, the mini apps are useful (I'd like more options!) the data on SD cards is readily recognised by native apps......all good.

I do have a theory here though in that the complaints are are always going to be what makes the news and the there is a silent majority who like myself have no issues, but then we are all guilty generally of focusing on faults rather than success. I have to say one of my main gripes still is that we cannot use the NTFS file format or the apps that support it as you need root access for those apps and I'm not prepared to go down that road.

SO on the whole I'd say upgrade.

In a word No.

You cannot use a USB dongle. What you need is something like the the Three MiFi device that allows you to connect over wireless. I have one of these and it works very well - you can connect multiple devices at the same time although performance will decrease as more devices are added dependant on what you are doing obviously.

As breedBenR says there is no magic formula to this I have 3 different makes all can take an external power lead there are two 500gb and one 320gb only one of the 500's works without power. Also the note about fat32 is important as android does not natively support ntfs - I really hope this comes in a future release, as today the apps that do allow this require root and I won't invalidate my warranty .

No the tablet cannot connect to the tv via usb - this is for storage only. For connection to the tv you would need some sort of DNLA device and then 'throw' to that - I have a media player that can perform this, some TV's can including some not all of the bravia's.

Yes you can connect a portable hard drive via the usb (you may need seperate power for the drive though) you will also need an OTG (on the go) cable you can pick these up very cheap on ebay.

You may need a seperate app - can't remember if the native app plays avi - but these are readily available and can play direct from SD card.

I believe ICS is now available in Ireland.

There is a free app on the store called Advanced Wi-fi Lock - should fix any issues you are experiencing. A workaround not a fix but free and should work.

Unfortunately if you are talking about attaching a usb dongle to your tablet s this isn't supported. You need to use wifi or change/upgrade your dongle to something like the 3 MyFi.

Hi there and welcome,

So the simple answer is yes.

The confusion comes from the fact that currently you can't from the native Sony apps - this is due to change once the ICS update finally reaches the UK!

So today you need a third party app from the store - there are many if it's just music then I find es explorer which is also a file manager with built in player to be pretty good. If you want movies as well I use a different app called mx player.

The fact is it is everyones preference and if you search this forum you'll find threads on this subject with more details and other apps both from myself and some of the other folks here.

I have the titanium2 with mic as I use with both the tablet and my iphone you can get them cheaper than shown here as well. An option I would definitely suggest you look at if you decide on in ear.

With regards to your son using some we managed to get some excellent fold up skullcandy lowriders that my daughter (nearly 9yrs old) uses - very affordable around £20 and pretty robust as well!

Communication is key and it's a real shame there is none forthcoming - I know generally Sony don't take part here - but they could and Omar did at one point.

I don't expect them to but surely they must see on the whole we generally try and help each other and solve problems for each other so some communication on occasion to a supportive site and audience would be proactive and productive.

All, I work in IT and have done for very many years. This type of phased release is not uncommon, I'm sure you'll have heard of alpha and beta programs. This next step is often termed Restricted Access or Resticted Release etc. The idea is to monitor for any bugs or issues further to the testing that are identified by the greater community - however it is a full release and once a specified time or number of users have used the release it is then moved to full release - i.e. when we should get it, which according to some reports I read was 14 ish days after US release.
