Thanks for the info. You are correct, it came with XP Pro SP2 preinstalled. So it means I should be fine to go above 137 GB you mentioned!

Is there anyway to find out what type of my existing HD drive is?

Vaio VGN-B1VP Uprgade Hard Drive

Hi,

I have a Vaio VGN-B1VP laptop which came with Fujitsu MHT2040AT hard drive, having a 40 GB capacity. I would like to replace it with a higher capcity hard drive. Can anyone advice me what is the max GB this model can take? I have read here a max of 250 GB this model can take, is it correct!

Also can any type of interal HD would be ok or I need to look for any specific type, ie. IDE, SATA etc. I am not sure what they are but aware of these type of HD are in the market. I am not sure what my exisiting one

is and how to find it.

Any help would be greatly appreciate and many thankx in advance.

Many thanks Blencogo for the suggestions.

As advised, I have now overcome the screen display problem.

But I still have the yellow question mark in device manager despite trying again installing the memory stick driver.

I downloaded the Memory Stick Driver (FS1_MemoryStick.zip) from vaio site for my model and extracted the ZIP file to C:\driver. They are:

1. tifmsony - security catalog file,

2. tifmsony - system file,

3. tifmsony - setup infomration file.

I also tried going to add/remove hardware and tried installing that way but could not as I don't know what type of hardware Memory Stick is and with what hardware should I associate it?

Any advice/suggestion are more than welcome.

Screen Problem - Can anyone help?

Hi,

This week I clean installed Windows XP with my own copy, on Vaio VGN-FS195VP. I installed all the drivers in the order as advised in one of the posts here from the CD I created from vaio website for my model and installed XP SP2 after that.

Since the XP installation, the display on screen has shrunk, roughly 2 cm each from left and right, 0.5 cm each from top and bottom. I have tried changing the display size but to no avail. When I checked the device manager, I see two yellow question marks under other devices for:

1. Mass Storage Controller and

2. Video Controller (VGA compatible).

Can anhyone help me with this?

Hi,

I have a Vaio VGN-FS195VP on which I have tried installing my own copy of Windows XP Pro after deleting what came with the notebook. In doing so, I faced few issues which I believe some of you may be able to help deal with.

I inserted windows XP CD and booted from the CD drive. During installation, I was prompted to select on which partition I would like installation, I chose C. I could not delete the partition of hard drive on which sony stores the directories for recovery. I would like to have that space back as I can do with more space on C drive. Can anyone help me with this?

Secondly,

Following other comments here on the forum I proceeded. After completing the installation, I inserted CD on which I earlier downloaded all the drivers for my model from sony's website. I created C:\drivers and copied those files in them. I read here in the forum they have to be installed in specific order which I tried. I clicked on zip files and extracted them in c:\dirvers folder. Do I have to do anything further with them? I have found setup.exe files in most of those extracted directories. Do I need to click and install each of them? Apologies, sounds a bit daft but I am so confused...

I have extracted these in the following order:

Original chipset driver, original sony notebook controler driver, original utilities package, full drivers pacakage, orginal video driver (it has two), original audio driver, original modem driver, original network driver, original wireless LAN driver, original USB mouse driver, original memory stick driver.

I am still left with original touchpad driver and original monitor driver, I have not extracted them yet as there is no mention on sony website in which order they would go.

I do not want to install any of Sony's extra stuff. I assume in that case I just need to update windows with SP3 directly or do I have to install first SP1, SP2 and then SP3? After this I will have to download microsoft KB835221 in order for audio to work.

Please help!

On second thought's I am thinking to re-start the entire installation in the following order:

1) Install Windows XP

2) Install service pack 3

3) Install KB KB835221

4) Install original full drivers package

5) Install Sony Utilities, Sony Shared Library, Vaio Event Service

6) Install the remaining utilities

I still need help on how to reclaim the hard disk space after deleting the partition on which sony original recovery system is stored. Also, do I have to click on setup.exe files on each driver application after extracting in C:\drivers.

Could you tech savoy guys help me.

Hi,

I have Sony Notebook VGN - FS195VP with Windows XP Professional. I would like to restore it to the factory settings with same Windows XP professional but with only some of the applications which came with the Notebook. Obviously, the restoration process does not allow me to proceed. I have read here in the forum to go ahead by unpacking the files using KCAP.exe and hopefully would be able to do it. I have also read here that before installing any Sony applications one has to install certain library files from Sony Website or using the Recovery Disc (which I have already created).

My Question is what are these library files and in what order does it needs to be installed? Are they all there in Recovery Disc?

There are certain related links in earlier posting here in the forum but unfortunately when I click on those hyperlinks, it takes me to the Sony Forum Welcome Page. Any idea how can I read those postings; one such posting is the following:

Hi,

I have a VGN-FS195VP which is 5 year old with Windows XP (SP3).

Last week, after finishing the work I tried to shut it down using the windows shut down command. The computer froze, I gave more than half an hour and after that I switched off using the power button. Next day, I switched it on and I scheduled the disk check error from windows when windows is started again. It took long time to begin the error check. After this, machine started and I got the dreaded black screen stating Operating System Not Found?

I gave couple of days and started again on AC power after removing the battery, still no joy.

I had a fresh install (factory setting from the hard disk) of the PC just a couple of month ago.

I have some important data on the hard drive of around 2 months which I need to retrieve. I would appreciate any suggestions to do this as I am not an expert in computing. I don't mind buying a new hard disk, which I know I have to but retrieving data is important. I have read some earlier post but could not figure out what to do in order to retrieve the data!
