Sony Alpha A65- "Camera Error" message

Do you have a Sony lens to try?

You said that "I did hear that you could get a "camera error" with certain Sigma lenses, but both lenses that were supplied had the compatible with alpha logo on the box".

Have you only tried Sigma lenses on it? If so, then it's obvious where the problem is.

You have swapped everything except the Sigma lenses and regardless of the compatibility sticker, Sigma are notorious for giving problems.

The A55 firmware upgrade is called the A57.

It is likely that image stabilisation has failed (Super Steady Shot). You'll need to get it repaired, but it might not be worth the cost.

Nikon and Canon don't put AF adjustment in similarly priced models to the A5x series. You have to get the D7000 for AF adjustment.

Like I said, Nikon and Canon use AF adjustment as a model differentiator, just like your complaint about Sony.

The Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 is slow to AF and hunts in low-light. Not great for a wildlife lens. Sigma is better, but costs more.

The A57 will not get AF adjust. Sony, like Canon and Nikon, differentiate their products by function. If they didn't then nobody would buy higher cost cameras.

High ISO noise is only a problem if you don't know how to use RAW. I guess you don't shoot RAW.

You need to go into the settings and find the release w/o lens option. By default the camera will be set to not operate the shutter without a lens being attached.

A firmware update could be coded to ignore the region, so no hardware involved.

The camera is still doing what it was doing when you bought it. If it is lacking a feature then you should have reasearched it before buying rather than expect Sony to cater for your lack of forethought.

Have you considered that the reason a particular model of Canon or Nikon gets updated is because their firmware is buggy? Good look waiting for Canon or Nikon to release firmware that ADDS features...

It's a faulty lens I reckon. The A65/77 sticker suggests that you have a newly manufactured lens too.

There are no issues on the A700 with any Sigma lens I have, even an ancient 24mm f2.8 works.

I hope that the rumour about the Sony A37 not having a screw auto-focus motor is false.

Most Sony lenses are not SAM or SSM and will not auto-focus on it.

I started out with the A200 with 18-70mm, great camera. Then the A700 and now the A77. My wallet is always empty for some reason...

1. Lots of places online. Any proper camera shop.

2. Not if you want to change the settings like you can with a Sony A700. Even the latest flagship A77 does not do tethering and it is a HUGE mistake on Sony's part, I'll not hold my breath waiting for them to add it to my A77. If you want tethering, get a Canon or Nikon.

3. It is unlikely that Sony will produce any more dSLRs with Optical View Finders, they will continue to produce the SLT line with the Electronic View Finder and fixed mirror. If you want an OVF, get a Canon or Nikon.

Current model up from the A580 is the A65, then the A77. If you wait a week or two there is a rumoured A57 annoucement.

From your questions, I'd say Sony isn't for you.

You miss the point about it not being wide enough.

You are going from a film camera, when you put your 35-105mm lens onto a APS-C sensor dSLR, the lens becomes the equivalent of putting a 52-157mm on your Dynax 7000i.

The lens will not be wide enough on a APS-C sensor dSLR due to the "crop factor", have a look here for an explanation:

For a basic kit lens you need something like the Sony 18-55mm or older Sony 18-70mm.

It's really simple.

EVERY Minolta AF lens works on EVERY Sony dSLR/SLT. That's it.

The Minolta 24mm f2.8 is a very nice lens, have a look on eBay at what they go for, sell it and put the money towards the new camera.

The 35-105mm isn't a very useful range, the 35mm end isn't wide enough and the 105mm end not long enough. Sell it and again, put the money towards the new camera.

With the cash you can decide on whether to get a Sony or another brand.
