Thanks for the advice, but I don't fancy paying for Arcobat Pro $200 just to have a manual that I can access offline. The camera didn't cost much more than $200. I imagine it'll be more cost effective to buy another camera.

Hi,

Does anyone have a PDF version of the HX7V i-manual? It's the manual available at http://esupport.sony.com/docs/dvimag/DSCHX7-HX7V_guide/eng/index.html. I don't always have an Internet connection on holiday and I'd like to keep a copy of the manual for reference on my tablet.

Thanks for the answers. Bit gutted that I bought something yesterday and it's already considered as being out of date. I bought the device from Argos (a british retailer) and they said the device is excluded from the 30 days return policy. Bit odd.

Anyway, I think I prefer Lovefilm Instant to Netflix - I could only find acient stuff on Netflix, such as Howard the Duck.

Hi,

I've just bought a SMP-N200 media streamer. I previously owned a WD Live Media Player, but replaced it as I wanted to stream LoveFilm content to my TV, in addition to play content from a USB hard disk. On the whole, I'm impressed with the device, but I've got a few questions...

1) On my WD Live Player, I was required to eject the disk before unplugging it. I've not found the option in the SMP-N200 - is there one?

2) When I sign in to Youtube, I can't see any of my unlisted videos. It's a bit strange considering the player has my youtube credentials.

3) I understand Netflix support is available in America, but not the UK. A UK press release said Netflix support was coming @ http://presscentre.sony.co.uk/content/detail.aspx?ReleaseID=7570&NewsAreaId=2. What happened?

I've recently acquired an Eye-fi card. While the card isn't perfect, it wirelessly (via a router or without router) transfers photos directly to iPhoto and videos are transfered to a folder.

For video, I couldn't decide if I should ditch AVCHD (good for bluray) for MP4 (lower quality, but good for Macs). As I've been using AVCHD for several years, I decided to stick with AVCHD, and use Handbrake to encode the AVCHD clips to MP4. The conversion process usually runs at 30-50fps on my MacBook Air. I use http://www.osomac.com/apps/osx/handbrake-batch/ to encode lots of clips at a time.

Once in MP4, I can either import into iPhoto, or iMovie if I wish to make a film then upload to YouTube and iTunes for my iPad.

When my Eye-Fi card gets full (it's a 8GB one), I stick it in my PC and archive the photo & video contents.

If Sony want to have a future in the camera market (and not have the camera business eaten away by the smart phone), they must develop products that take better pictures than a phone. So does your iPhone shoot in RAW and have variable jpeg compression?

No, but the phone's jpeg compression is at a level that doesn't introduce noticable artifacts. I'd expect a Cybershot Camera (that can only do one thing - take pictures) to have more control over photo settings like the compression level.

My iPhone has a 8MP camera and can do full 1080p video. Also with it being always connected to the Internet, sharing photos with friends and family is a breeze. You'd expect the photos on an iPhone (or Android) to be of lower quality, due to the lens being smaller, but I find Cybershots HX are lower quality based on the terrible compression Sony have inflicted on them.

It's been a while since I last visited this forum. It's sad to see that after months of users being unhappy about the firmware in the current batch of Cybershots (such as setting the level of compression, or lack of RAW), that Sony haven't addressed the issue. I expect they're not going to address the issue, and expect us to buy new hardware with the improved firmware.

I must admit my Cybershot HX7V has been sat in the back of the cupboard for a few months now. I find my iPhone 4s adequate for capturing adhoc photos and videos. To be brutely honest, I find see less compression artifacts on my iPhone photos that my Cybershot photos.

Based on your experience with Sony's Cybershot cameras, would you buy another Cybershot? I'm happy using my mobile, and if I had to buy another camera, I'd go with a company that invests in development of existing hardware, rather than expect users to buy a new camera for features that could easily be fixed in the firmware.

Reliability of GPS signal in UK

Does the camera say it's got GPS lock when you take the photo? You may need to change the display settings on the screen so you see this information.

It can take a while for the camera to get a lock on the GPS satellites. I've found that it takes 4+ minutes to get a lock with normal GPS. If your camera is using assisted GPS (it's a file on the memory card), it usually takes 1 minute to get a lock. If your inside / in a built up area / under trees, it could take much longer or not even get a lock.

Even though Cybershots are better than most cameras for locking on GPS (when using assisted GPS), I still find it's annoyingly slow for my liking. I've just bought Sony's GPS-CS1 from ebay (http://www.sony.co.uk/product/dcc-gps/gps-cs1) to stop getting annoyed.

Hi Simon,

I'm usually a bit cautious when buying 3rd party cables when Sony recommend to only use their own cables. Yes, just a USB cable for charging would be ideal. Then I could use the my laptop for charging, or the same USB charger that my mobile phone uses.

My camera came with a USB cable for charging, but I can't determine the model number of the cable to order another one. Do you know the model number of this cable?

Increase GPS almanac from 30 days to 180 days

From my research, it seems that the GPS assist functionality uses GPS almanac data stored on the memory card (http://blog.brixandersen.dk/?p=153). The data on the memory card is good for 30 days.

The thread goes on to say that a regular GPS almanac last for 180 days. Is it possible for the PMB tool to supply 150-180 days of GPS data?

DSC-HX9V Issues

Conterfit memory cards is quite common these days. I bought a 32GB microSD card from an Amazon 3rd party seller. After running a diagnostic tool, the memory card was 2GB, which had been modified to appear as 32GB when inserted into a computer.

Due to this, I only ever buy memory cards from retailers that I know and trust. They may cost a bit more, but it's worth it in the long run.

I bought a Sony HD camcorder 2-3 years ago. In my experience, Sony rarely release firmware updates for their products. If the item you have bought does not fit your requirements you should return it. Any end user suggestions will probably get fed into future products rather than existing ones.

Just picked up my HX7V a few days ago. Bought this camera to replace my aging Minolta 5D (too big), Panasonic FX9 (no HD video), and Sony HDR-SR12E (too big). On the whole I'm impressed with the camera, but have two niggles...

1) The automatic flash is a bit too sensentive for my liking. I had a similar issue with the flash on the Sony HDR-SR12E. This is a minor issue compared to...

2) Why oh why has Sony put it's own proprietary multi-use terminal connection (type 3b) on the camera. When travelling, I like to carry the bare minimum - like one micro usb charging cable for my phone and the same cable for my camera. Not possible with this camera. In addition, while most micro usb cables cost ~£2, the Sony charging cable has other builtin connections which I do not want, and especially do not want to take on holiday with me - and it costs £35!

In my opinion, if you buy a 16MP camera with 1080i video, you'll only ever need a USB and HDMI connections. Not a cable with composite connections.

Anyone know of where I can buy a charging cable like the one supplied out of the box? Or better still, a small adaptor that converts a micro USB connection into a Sony Multi use connector (type 3b)?

I was about to congratulate Sony for adapoting SD cards rather than the proprietary memory stick, but they're still clinging on to their proprietary background.

Thumbs up for the rest of the camera though
