KDL-32L4000 stripes on screen

Hope someone here can help me.....
I have a 3 year old Sony KDL-32L4000 which went kaput last week. It went from watching a normal DVD to stripes either side of the screen (when there's no picture it's a black horizontal band).

I still have a picture 2 inches from the top of the screen, and perfect sound.

I took it to a local repair shop who advised it was the Inverter at fault. I tracked one down and installed it myself - but still the same picture.

Can anyone suggest what other options (apart from binning it) I could try?
