Which Sony Blu-ray players will get the new Lovefilm instant app?

My understanding was that indeed media remote should work on this product. Make you you have the latest firmware on the Blu-ray and try also resetting it. In addition have you tried the 'TV Sideview' application as I think this will be replacing media remote moving forwards (albeit Media Remote won't be updated)

Unlikely at the moment as the PS3 architecture is totally different to Blu-ray players and so would need work in making it compatible, so nothing to announce at the moment..

Normally via the 'SEN' ( Sony Entertainment Network) button on the remote control, or if you call up the menu via the home screen and look at the options there. The Netflix button on the remote is(was?) on only on US models.

Appreciate your frustration, so let me clarify. All services in all countries require agreement of both Sony and the partner to be on the Sony Entertainment Network platform. We would have loved for them to stay but agreement could not be reached, and so Moshcam is unfortunaetly no longer avaialble.

Ditto - I read the piece on the BBC at the weekend and still don't understand why. Seems like an engineering statement rather than a consumer need or request.

Maybe we should make a convex rather than concave shaped TV instead to improve the depth of field for 3D...

Hi, I guess you are referring to this report right? http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/22/netflix-streaming-usage-hdtv-pc/ It is US only data where market dynamics are very different and HDTV category in the report includes game consoles apparently, so it doesn't breakout console useage. I see our European consumption statistics for all services and the patterns are different. Indeed you can see the iPlayer data here http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/iplayer/iplayer-performance-mar13.pdf Console usage was bigger a little while back, but that share has been eaten into by tablets massively, but you can see how small connected TV's/Blu-ray players are as a percentage share of total usage.

Any video partner have to secure approval from the studio before they can launch on a device, and they require approval on a device by device basis. So yes it is Netflix question, but they wouldn't be permitted to launch unless the studio approved.

The way the content is secured & delived in Europe is different yes. Studios demand increasing protection for their content, to the extent that the European Netflix UX on 2012+ devices is different to US 2010-2012 devices which uses a different type of DRM alltogether. As this type isn't by todays standards considered strong enough, partners no longer like to launch services using this DRM moving to newer vesions which provide not only better user experiences but stronger protection as mandated by the studios. Also active Connected TV's are a relatively small category for Netflix when compared to games consoles in Europe.

Hmm, thats an odd one - we have a new version of Homestream literally in the starting blocks due for release shortly, so this may resolve the issue. Have you tried rebooting the Mac anyway, just to check if that fixes it?

Hmm - just seen an email that Homestream 2 is based off Serviio 1.2.1 which looks like its the current one. I'll check though as historically we took out some of the more complicated elements just to simplifiy it for mass market consumers, but may well just leave these elements in as it may be tricker to customise.

Gut instinct says it will have pluggn support, but I'll check..

Unfortunately not as its both hardware ( entirely new chipset and processor) and software in the TV's thats required to deliver mirroring, not just software, otherwise an upgrade may have been possible.

Just an update - new version of Homestream is currently in beta and this will support subtitles. Just have to sign the contracts and we should be all set, but don't anticipate any issues. Hopefully we can get it up in the next week or so.

Current version of Serviio supports subtitles.

Only major difference between the two is that Homestream has better compatibilty with Sony products, profiles are tweaked a little to optimise the overall experience, but they are largely the same products.

Its cutting the ends of movies off? Maybe its something to do with the way those elements have been encoded which is effectively causing the device to basically error. Does it happen if you playback via USB also\?

Yup - Sees it in the same way that it would a PC. I use both a Synology NAS & PC to stream. Indeed on the NAS you can actually install serviio.

For what its worth, it might be worth looking at a new Blu-ray player as they are all conncted, most have integrated wi-fi as well as Ethernet along with DLNA support and apps like iPlayer. They are much easier to get online and a fraction of the price of replacing the TV.

With this years TV's offering technology mirroring technology - http://www.sony.net/united/connectedworld/us/watch/ allowing you to stream anything from your smartphone to your TV, it raises an interesting point that actually should TV's (as devices in general, not just Sony) focus on quality picture and sound ( which the Sony models all have, demonstrated by the plethora of awards last year) rather than the world of smart, which as you can see from the huge variances between manufacturers is a tough market to crack? As people usually have their phones with them at all times, which are getting more and more powerful, maybe this becomes more of a hub and the screen becomes simply the consumption device. Its all pretty subjective however really interested to hear peoples opinions on this

iPlayer and the like came in on the BDP-S570 onwards so the device that was released a year after yours in early 2010. I'm guessing you bought yours as part of a package in 2009/early 2010 as they are the same generation right? The Tv is still excellent, but to add the 'smart' element, you could just replace the Blu-ray player with any of the current models. The 2013 models ahve just started shipping I think.

Ah, Applicast, brings back memories. Its an old system of delivering widgets to the TV, but its since been superseded by Sony Entertainment Network on newer devices, so I'm afraid you won't find anything of note on there any more.

If you are interested in getting online though, worth checking out the Blu-ray players as besides making all your existing DVD's look much much better, you can also access services like BBC iPlayer. http://www.sony.co.uk/hub/blu-ray-disc-player

Thats odd. Are you running the latest firmware? CAn either update via USb stick or by connecting the TV to the Internet and accessing the menu settings.

Hmm, Flash is on its way out as a platform of choice for many video sites now with most UK broadcasters either offering or about to offer revised ways of accessing content across multiple platforms. So can't offer guaranteed compatibility with all sites, but that's the general direction in any event, which would explain why LG weren't updating theirs also.

I think they are about 8 meters or so from memory, but don't have one to actually check. However they are easy to change for alternative longer ones if needed as they can be unclipped easily. If you checkout your nearest Sony Centre, John Lewis or bigger PC World, we have very good instore guys & girls who will be able to show you.

Yes the Sony app unfortunately doesn't work with this model unfortunately, however you could try using 'Zeebox' or 3rd party apps as these might offer a degree of control?

Just to update, new Homestream will happen, we are just working on the contract etc at the moment as I want to add language packs and ensure we can market it in other countries as well. Hopefully in the next month or so. As you can see the underlying software is already complete and so the technical work is pretty much done. Just need to add the tweaks & customisation, and in due course, support for 2013 products also.

Did you see the sticky post at the top of the page which might help. Most common issue is taking the actual firmware file out of the unzipped directory, when you actually have to leave it in the directory for the TV to see it.

why does Slingplay work in the US and not on the UK firmware of the Sony device

Sony Spotlight is just an area for Sony to promote key or 1st party applications. It doesn't replace Play store. So it might not be in spotlight, as its not a key partner in the way that Netflix, Video Unlimited, iPlayer etc. Did Sling explain why its not available in Google Play store as thats run by Google and anyone can upload applications there once approved by Google as apps, can of course appear in Play Store and not Sony Select

Good answer from BRAVIA55HX923. Just to expand a little, the S790 won so many awards towards the end of 2012 as the onboard chip is capable of 4k upscaling, it was decided to carry it through into 2013 as the principle high end Blu-ray player.
