Do you have data you need to recover?

If you have a full back-up, you may need to Recover the Vaio back to factory settings which should reformat and reistall from the Recovery Area. This should cure the virus as it is extremely unlikely that it will have affected the hidden Recovery Area.

To recover from the recovery area follow instructions in your Recovery Guide: -

Hmmmmm..........

Looks like Safe Mode is not available unless you can acces the Start Menu.

You could try this - I haven't tried it so no guartantees!!!!

1) Turn off the PC

2) Press the ASSIST Button

3) Select Recovery

4) Select Advanced

5) Select Command Prompt

6) Enter the following command :

bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy

7) Restart the Vaio and tap on the F8 key

8) The legacy menu appears. Select Safe Mode

This should disable the new Metro bootloader and revert to the Windows 7 version.

To go back to the Metro version, use the following command at the command prompt: -

bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy standard

The only sure way to check if the battery is dead is to borrow a working battery from a Vaio shop or from another owner with the same model.

I would recommend that you only buy a genuine Sony battery (include 'Genuine' in the search).

Many of the batteries being sold on-line simply don't work at best - or at worst they can permanently damage your Vaio. Never agree to a 'BIOS Fix'.

Look in Device Manager -> Display Adapters. Does the nVidia graphics show?

There is a common nVidia chip video fault with your model. It seems too much of a coincidence that this has appeared when you have changed the OS but if you cannot find any other explanation,you may need to get this checked.

Can you give us the full Vaio S model? Recovery options vary depending on model/age.

Turn off the Vaio completely and press the ASSIST button with the Vaio still closed down. What options are shown on the Vaio Care Rescue screen??

Sony do not make such a caddy but third party manufacturers do. You will have to Google to find a supplier. Try "2nd hard drive caddy".

Further info (which explains why I'm bothered by this BIOS update conflict):
BIOS R0081C8 (27/12/2012) "Improves battery Lifetime, resolves hang up during Vaio Logo"
BIOS R1021C8 (beginning of 2013) "Sustaining C8", "Update Vaio Care Rescue Mode".

So, should we opt for the improved battery lifetime and hang-up fix, or for the update Vaio Care rescue mode?
And what does "sustaining C8" mean, anyway?

Unfortunately, Sony do not offer an 'upgrade' service.

You would need to source a new keyboard yourself if it will work - there may need to be an ambient light sensor already fitted.

A work of warning - this will probably invalidate your warranty.

From the model number, I guess this is not a European Vaio and you may need to contact Sony in the country of purchase.

It sounds like a hardware fault in the power circuitry or the power switch and you will probably need a repair.

There are 2 ways to transfer video from your TRV10E to your Vaio. Unfortunately, both require additional equipment.

1. You will need to buy an ExpressCard34 Firewire Card to plug into your Vaio. You can then connect the camera's iLink/DV out to the Vaio's firewire port and import your video without drivers into something like the free Windows Movie Maker. You will also need to connect with an audio cable for sound.

You are quoting an invalid model - you are probably using the chassis model which can be shared by several models. See if you can fing the Product Model - it will be something like SVD1121**EB.

I don't think any of the Vaio Duo 11 models have built-in WWAN.

The Vaio Duo 13 (SVD1321****) models do have built-in WWAN but I'm not sure if they are available yet.

Find a valid product model from the box or from another sticker and we will try to get an answer for you.

The Picture Package and ImageMixer software provided with your camcorder are not compatible with any versions of Windows except XP. If you are running Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8, the software will not run and is of no use to you.

The USB connection is not supported since XP either.

So, if you don't have XP, to transfer video from DV Tapes in the camera you have 2 options: -

1. Connect the iLink/DV out jack on the camera to a firewire input on your PC. Download the free 'Windows Movie Maker' and import your video for editing/burning to DVD.

2. If you don't have a firewire input you may be able to buy a PC Card or an ExpressCard to add a firewire input. If you don't have a card slot, then the only way is output analogue video from the camera's video/S-Video output and convert this to a digital signal by buying a Video Capture Device which will connect to your PC by USB. You will need something like this: -

Yes the SSD models are different inside from the models with a conventional hard drive.

Z and S-Series Vaios sold with a SSD installed use a Toshiba SSD which has its casing removed - so it is not possible to fit a larger, standard SSD in the small space provided without removing the casing which will invalidate the warranty.

However, you don't have this problem because you are doing it the other way round. If you have a standard hard drive, this can be replaced by a standard SSD as the space is larger in HDD models.

I presume you are trying to install the 64-bit version of Calibre? Where are you downloading the software from?

It says it is compatible but because it is freeware, Microsoft will not offer any support.

It seems to work OK for some people and not for others.

If all else fails, you could try installing it in Vista Compatibility Mode.

Sony only support online product registration for Vaios that are still within Warranty. Sony only offer free support during this period. Registration is for warranty purposes.

If you want to register the Vaio now, you will need to telephone Vaio Support on the OOW (out of warranty) premium telephone line 0905 0310006. Have your Vaio's Serial Number to hand and you may need to provide proof and date of purchase.

You are not quoting a valid Vaio Product Model. You are probably using the chassis type model which can be shared by many S-Series 13.3" models.

Try looking for another sticker on the Vaio, or look on the box, or look in Vaio Control Centre -> System Information for the correct product model. From what you say it will be something like SVS1313C5E and you should find this in the Registration List.

You are quoting an invalid model - you are probably using the chassis model type from the back of the Vaio. For support services, download updates etc, I think you will find the correct product model is something like VGC-V2M.

There are several ways of doing this. The simplest is to buy a USB wifi adapter as this just needs pluggung into a USB port. I would buy one with an extension cable - so you can keep the USB receiver away from the Vaio to improve reception. Something like this: -

I don't think it is possible to put a wireless card into your model Vaio.

If your house is a large one, with the Vaio a long way from the router, you may find a set of Homeplugs gives better reception. A pair of Homeplugs plug into any mains electricity socket - one by the router and one by the Vaio - and connect using the mains electricity wiring with an encrypted signal. Each Homeplug has an ethernet connection.

That rather depends on what video outputs your laptop has!

The TV has Scart, Component and Composite inputs - so there is unlikely to be a direct connection.

If your laptop has a VGA (monitor) output, you will need a VGA to Composite converter box - something like this: -

Do you still have the warranty document? I would guess that you have a US Warranty and this may only be valid in the US.

From what you say, it does not sound like a manufacturing fault - more like accidental damage, which will not be covered by the warranty.

That's an odd one - usually everything is fine in VGA (Safe) Mode but is faulty in Windows when the driver loads.

As the Vaio has worked OK for some time, I doubt if it is a BIOS issue - this sounds like a hardware fault to me.

and click on 'Vaio & Computing'. A window will open and you need to enter your Vaio's Serial Number. This will verify that your Vaio is still within Warranty and you will be given the contact details.
